Coburn, Lieberman Float Medicare Proposal
Congressional Quarterly ^ | June 28, 2011 | Steven T. Dennis

Posted on 06/28/2011 3:24:36 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) entered the debt and deficit debate Tuesday, proposing a Medicare overhaul they said would cut the deficit by about $600 billion during the next decade.

The duo, which Coburn nicknamed the “brothers two,” now intends to drum up support by shopping its plan around, including to the “gang of six,” from which Coburn took a sabbatical. Coburn left the bipartisan group, which was exploring ways to decrease the deficit, because he felt it was not going far enough in cutting entitlements.

But he has clearly found an ally in Lieberman, who in recent years has leaned more to the right on health care issues despite remaining a member of the Democratic Conference.

Under their plan, the age of eligibility for Medicare would gradually increase to 67 from 65, starting in 2014. The proposal assumes the continued implementation of President Barack Obama’s health care law. Under the Coburn-Lieberman plan, seniors would be eligible to participant in the health care exchanges created by that law.

There are no painless ways to solve this problem anymore. I give Lieberman and Coburn credit for trying to do something.

I hope everyone is watching Greece closely. That is us in a few years if the $100+ Trillion unfunded mandate (Medicare and SS) isn’t backfilled, and soon.

Me? I am planning my retirement as if neither will exist.

You even see it on this site. Many freepers think cutting a few dollars here and there is going to solve this.

Everything is going to be on the chopping block and that ois the only fair way to do this.

Even if theirs is the best plan in the world, I will never, ever, ever trust Lieberman.

Don’t mend it, end it. Trying to keep Medicare alive and assuming Obamacare will be implemented spell double trouble.

Top Democrats, however, have made it clear they will not support a major overhaul of Medicare without tax revenues and will not support cutting benefits themselves under any scenario.

...The proposal assumes the continued implementation of President Barack Obama’s health care law....

For that reason above I give Coburn no credit whatsoever. No more talk of full repeal of Obamacare - WHY? Is it because so many other unrelated things were imbedded in those 3000 pages that are already being implemented? If you are lucky enough to keep your job until you are 67, then maybe no problem on raising the age. Point is that Medicare is about Bust right now. We need Perestroika, not just tinkering around the edges.

Furthermore, I don’t want Medicare. I should have a choice. Everyone should have a choice. Why does the Federal Govt. decide this for me? I am a very self-centered Baby Boomer and if I don’t get my way on this, there will be HELL to pay. Coburn has jumped the shark as far as I am concerned.

Tom Coburn spent all his energy in stopping Obamcare.
He is a physician. He should know.

He along with Senator Barasso were the floor generals
in the Senate December 2009.

However, what happened Dr. Coburn?

et tu, Brute?

I’m not giving up any of my Medicare taxes, or change in Medicare
age unless YOU BASTARDS repeal Obamacare.

If you think I’m going to subsidize able bodied people up to $10-15,000
a year...relatively young people.
Maybe youner than me.

NO BLANKING WAY.

SO COBURN GO BACK TO OKLAHOMA.

WE the People will never rest until Obamacare is repealed.

We have no issue with making the tax code fair for individual
and employer based health insurance.
That is constitutional— the income tax Amendment to the Constitituion.

BUT OBAMACARE STILL INCLUDES THE EMPLOYER BASED SUBSIDY
and the individuals get nothing!!!! unless you call the 10% deduction
anything...thanks it used to be above 7.5% of your income.

WHere is the outrage that individuals ARE not treated the same
as employer based health insurance???!!!

OBamacare is tyranny.

We must repeal it. Lock stock and barrel.

We will not rest.

We will prevail.

So you think coburn and leiberman can get 65 other senators to repeal obamacare? Or should they just sit on their hands until after the pres election? I truly do not understand your post other than perhaps you really think someone on this site might actually prefer to keep obamacare.

Coburn is a taxer and spender, that much is now obvious.

He’s not a conservative, just pretends to be like virtually every other a-hole Republican except Rand Paul and some other “tea” members.

“because he felt it was not going far enough in cutting entitlements”

WHY, WHY, WHY WON'T ANYONE TALK ABOUT THE ACTUAL PROBLEM.

1st What is called “entitlements” should be divided in two groups, as it actually is: money paid out to people that have paid money into the system all their life, and those drawing money from the system that have never paid in a red cent!

2nd WHO are we proposing to cut - those that have paid into the system throughout their life or those that have paid nothing?

The actual facts and numbers that go with the two items above would properly characterize the problem. It might lead to the second American revolution - but so what - it's long overdue!
