As you can see, owning a gas station / convenience store in NC near the border is a losing proposition......thanks to state Govt.

Yep, unless you catch some tourists around Carowinds or other sites that have not been to South Carolina. Occasionally I travel to SC on business and make certain my tank is full before I leave. It's not quite to the point that I will make a 60 mile r/t from NC just to buy the $0.20 per gallon cheaper gas, but I can buy as little in NC as possible before heading to the Palmetto state.

I don't how they came up with these numbers.

The federal gas tax

California state tax

State and Federal tax total

Sales tax

18.4

35.7

54.1

68.9 - 54.1 = 14.8

~8.75% *drops 1% to 7.75% July 1st

Gas would need to be around $2.50 /g for these numbers to work.

It would be interesting to superimpose the States budget deficit on top of the Gas taxes, wanna bet there's a close correlation?

That's 70 cents per gallon, not 70%.

Oh, that's ...not much better...

I’m in California, too, with a vacation condo in AZ and the gas price differentials are ridiculous. It’s still close to $4 a gallon for premium here (I think it’s $3.89 or so) and it was $3.56 for premium when I filled up in Bullhead City last weekend. Any California gas station near the state line is basically screwed.

But FL has no state income tax and our state sales tax is lower than NY. Of my friends on Long Island, most pay in excess of 9K yearly property taxes. Here in FL I pay one tenth that.

All states play careful “balancing” games - you may have no income tax, or such, but the state will take it out of your hide another way.

KS is a very strange state.

I know a few Kansans. They are very traditional, and seem conservative, yet a strain of independance runs through them. You never know what side of an issue they are going to come down on.

For instance, “Tiller the Killer” operated in KS for years, and there were never any brakes put on the man (legally)until some nut shot him.

Now you know why all those rich movie stars are buying ranches in WY.

All we have to do is head west to Dixon, north to Rockford or south to Mendota and we’ll find cheaper gas. We’re always higher than around us (except to the east). But it makes no sense to drive that far to fill up. But my wife works in Rockford, so she plans it to fill up there as much as she can. As for right here, the Casey’s in Creston (5 miles east of us) has the cheapest gas always, by about 5-8¢/gal.

Thje person that shot Tiller was courageous, and did what was necessary to save inocent lives. Tiller would still be murdering unborn children, had he not been shot.

Yeah, you are right about Kansans wanting to be independent, I cause stupid decisions sometimes, and one of those was not letting Phil Kline prosecuted tiller, if he had, Tiller would still be alive, Irony.

The station closest to me, in Indiana, also had the lowest price around there, and yesterday when I went to fill up, they were out of gasoline entirely.

You’re such a young one! You could always buy gas at Hudson stations in Overland Park for $.25 a gallon. We used to wait for a gas war and it was $.19/gal though. Filled up two teenagers cars and mine every Monday morning for $20.00.
