Bachmann won't commit to 'Cut, Cap and Balance' pledge
By: CNN Political Reporter Peter Hamby

Rock Hill, South Carolina (CNN) - Nearly every Republican presidential candidate has pledged to sign the "Cut, Cap and Balance" pledge to slash government spending, but U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann is not ready to commit.

Her reason? It doesn't go far enough.

The pledge, backed by more than 150 conservative groups and a dozen GOP Republican senators, demands that Congress not raise the debt ceiling unless it passes "substantial" budget cuts and spending caps along with a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney became the sixth GOP candidate to support the pledge on Wednesday.

Bachmann, though, said she wants it "to go a little further." She told a town hall audience in South Carolina that she wants to add "the full defunding of Obamacare" to the pledge first.

She revealed that U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, a leading conservative backer of the pledge, had asked her to get on board.

She and DeMint had "a wonderful conversation" about the pledge during a phone call last week, Bachmann said. She only told him, though, that she "would take a look at it."

I'd love to defund Obamacare right now but it won't happen until we get him out of office.

No politician should sign pledges. It’s all show and worthless.

Wow. The Communist News Network (CNN) is really afraid of her! Yes, not much can get done until Obama is thrown out of the Oval Office — cannot happen fast enough.

IMHO, it’s a huge strategic error to pressure all GOP candidates to commit to a rigid position, with no wiggle room on tactics. There’s more than one way to skin a cat.

So why not sigh and go farther on her own?

For many, pledges may well be for show but not to those who sign them with a sense of honor and decency.

These pledges get ridiculous. Signing a pro life pledge is easy to hold firm on but others can be too restrictive.

She says that this pledge doesn’t go far enough. Fine, but then she should propose her own plan. It is easy to say that some pledge doesn’t go far enough, coming up with an alternative is hard.

She could also sign the pledge, and then say she will go further.

Neg, newb.

She came up with an alternative, gutting obamacare. Pledges are ways to let others choose your battleground. A good commander chooses his own ground.

Maybe she'd sign a "Defund, Disband, and Demolish" pledge instead?

Apply it to the Departments of Education & Indoctrination,
Enviro-Whacko Procreation Agency,
Health & Human Subjugation,
Foreign Energy,
Commerce Clause,
Agri-business,
Interior Decorating,
Labor Union,
Homeland Insecurity,
Transporters,
Housing Bubble & Urban Decay, etc.

Nonsense...

Attach a complete and inseparable Obamacare repeal to the debt limit... dump the whole smelly pile right into Harry Reid's lap...

Done deal.

I agree with those that think the pledges are silly. Half of it is a way for the liberal media to say “she’s not conservative enough for you GOP primary voters”.

Thank you! This is all pandering to the voters. Look at me! I'm signing a pledge and he/she isn't! That makes me a better candidate! It is bordering on asinine. These stupid things are not legally binding so who cares.

She did, basically. Cut, cap and balance, but the cut includes defunding Obamacare.

The pledge, backed by more than 150 conservative groups and a dozen GOP Republican senators, demands that Congress not raise the debt ceiling unless .....

The key word is "unless". If they put a period after "ceiling", then I think she might sign it. The "unless" basically makes the pledge a useless symbol.
