Nato reviews Libya campaign after France admits arming rebels

New Libyan rebel recruits train near Benghazi. France today admitted arming rebels in partsof the country, in apparent defiance of the UN mandate

Nato is reviewing the conduct of its military campaign in Libya after France admitted arming rebel fighters in apparent defiance of the UN mandate.

The revelation surprised officials in Nato's headquarters in Brussels and raised awkward questions about whether the French had broken international law – UN resolution 1973 specifically allows Nato nations to protect civilians in Libya, but appears to stop short of permitting the provision of weapons.

Nato has consistently said it would not arm rebel commanders, saying it was beyond its remit. But military chiefs in Paris confirmed that French planes had dropped consignments of machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, and anti-tank missiles to rebels in the western Nafusa mountains. A report in Le Figaro newspaper said the French parachuted "large amounts" of munitions to help the rebel push on Tripoli earlier this month.

This was confirmed by French armed forces spokesman Thierry Burkhard. He said they had provided humanitarian aid of water, food and medical supplies to civilians in the region under siege from regime forces. "There were humanitarian drops because the humanitarian situation was worsening, and, at one point, it seemed the security situation was threatening civilians who could not defend themselves," Burkhard told Reuters.

"France therefore also sent equipment allowing them to defend themselves, comprising light weapons and munitions." They were "self-defence" assets, he said. It appears France did not inform any Nato allies of the weapons drop, or Nato headquarters, where officials were today seeking clarification from Paris.

Nato was also trying to establish legal basis France had for taking this apparently unilateral action. Officials expressed surprise at what had happened and insisted its military approach had not changed.

Giving weapons to people trying to get rid of a mass murderer is illegal?

Unbelievable.

Ghaddafi’s “mass murdering” days were behind him. This is an Islamist takeover attempt which we are aiding.

That dog had been neutered by Bush.

the U.N. authorized a NO FLY zone only.

so the people wouldn’t live in fear of being bombed!

then, NATO has dropped over 2,000 smart bombs, plus cruise missles, etc.

they have bombed civilian buildings, killing children.
(NATO has ADMITTED they have bombed and killed children!!!)

they have bombed an ORTHODOX CHURCH.
they have bombed a school for disabled children.
(fortunately empty).

NATO has sent GUNSHIP helicopters, in direct support of ground operations.

...after all that, WHO would complain about a few weapons dropped to the ISLAMISTS that NATO is helping ?!?

...and, even stupid ignorant FRENCH NGO’S are reporting the truth now:

Al-Qaeda and the Libyan Rebellion
National Review Online ^ | June 23, 2011 | John Rosenthal
A new report from two French think tanks concludes that jihadists have played a predominant role in the eastern-Libyan rebellion against the rule of Moammar Qaddafi, and that “true democrats” represent only a minority in the rebellion.
The report, furthermore, calls into question the justifications given for Western military intervention in Libya, arguing that they are largely based on media exaggerations and “outright disinformation.”

“Giving weapons to people trying to get rid of a mass murderer is illegal?”

Yes, because using guns is violent and could get people hurt.

you are exactly correct Sir!
great points!

...i certainly detest Quadafi. and i DO blame him for Lockerbie, etc.

but, he gave up his Nuc program,
yet we bomb him, not Iran?
he MAYBE killed 100 of his people (mostly Islamists),
yet we bomb him, not Sudan’s President, who has murdered 100,000 Christians?

Our OWN US Gov. report, said the TOP Al-Quada recruiting area for Afghan fighters (killing OUR troops),
was Eastern Liyba / Benghazi.
Quadafi was GIVING us info about them.
Which is why they hate him.
(and why they lied to the media about “atrocities”,
EXACTLY as they did in Kosovo, and Palestine)

Obama is helping ISLAMISTS, all over the world. Iran, the MB in Egypt, AQ in Libya, and is negotiating with the Taliban in Afghanistan.

...remember: “I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction,”

Who is behind these massacres? Obama!

It is time that the international community exercise its right to rid the planet of this mass murderer. We demand that the ICC indict Obama, extradite him to the Hague, put him on trail and them give him life in prison for being a war criminal.

The last sentence says it all, since one of the so called ragtag leaders lived outside of Langley Virginia for years not far from the CIA and had no visible means of support and the other one, the so called Doctor of whatever, was educated in Pa and was and is a friend of Samantha Powers.

It would seem to an unbiased observer or a visiting Martian that Obama has done more to help the Islamists than hurt them. In two short years he has turned Egypt — the largest Arab nation — over to the M. Brotherhood and is not turning Afghanistan back to the Taliban.

(They killed Osama under his watch, but I doubt that he could have stopped that if he tried.)

Makes you wonder if Obama really is a Muslim Manchurian Candidate character secretly working for Jihad.

Hmmmnp. What a whack of nonsense. First off this is not a war, its a unexpected kinetic response. Accordingly, the guns and munitions are defensive weapons, for the defense of the people: not aggressive offensive weapons. “France therefore also sent equipment allowing them to defend themselves, comprising light weapons and munitions.” They were “self-defence” assets, he said..... says it all.

If there was a mass murderer here its Al, Al Qaeda. And Obama wants to back them and the taliban?????

Don’t wonder.
Libya is a capital asset gift for the upcoming MB Egypt and completion of phase one of the North African Caliphate.
Iraq and Afghanistan are going to fold in with Pakistan and Iran for phase two. Then there will be an assault on Israel.... and a uprising in America in time for his campaign.
Notice how he is bleeding America for energy at every level? So it cannot fight for others and or defend itself/ let alone ramp up production for a war.

Before you give weapons to them you should know who they are. The press have interviewed various rebels. People who traveled from Libya to Iraq to fight US there. Al Queda of North Africa. And others.

Michele Bachmann said in the June debate even the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, of which she is a member, doesn't know who the rebels are.
