This week marked the end of a legislative season in which Texas Gov. Rick Perry got pretty much everything he wanted - especially if what he wanted were talking points for a Republican presidential campaign.
The Texas legislature passed a fiscally austere budget that left $6 billion in the state's rainy-day fund, and bills requiring women seeking abortions to get sonograms, voters to show photo identification and plaintiffs who bring lawsuits deemed frivolous to pay court costs and attorney fees.
Even where he was defeated, Perry won points from conservatives for putting up a fight. He tried to ban "sanctuary cities" where police are not allowed to question the immigration status of people they detain. And he forced the lawmakers to vote on an "anti-groping" bill that could have put Transportation Security Administration agents in prison if they do intrusive pat-downs.
He is currently the nation's longest-serving governor, and the longest in Texas history, as well as head of the Republican Governors Association. But his brash, unapologetic conservatism also has elevated him to near-hero status among the tea party. Perry was one of the first big-name politicians to recognize the potential of the movement, headlining no fewer than three of their earliest rallies in Texas on April 15, 2009.

He’s running, he’d be crazy not to.
we can do better than Rick Perry.
The race (right now) if not between Rick and Barry, but between Rick and much better (and worse) Republican candidates.
Rick suffers from the Romney/McCain/Dole scenario. Rick will NOT energize the conservative and tea party base, but would turn out the Republican “machine” vote. We lost the last 2 times we tried the “machine” candidate of McCain and Dole. I went to the caucuses and the primaries and all the “energy” came from other candidates then, too. Once it was decided on the “machine” candidate, we were doomed.
“Our nation is heading into a liberal lead abyss and all who believe they can save the nation owe it to the nation to make the effort.’
Absolutely right.
I just posted an article about Ronald Reagan — it reminds us how great the US used to be and how far down we’ve come.
We need someone to reverse the downward spiral that is accelerated under Obama.

I agree.
We need a conservative and Rick Perry is not one.
His caving in to HEB and Perry Homes on the sanctuary cities bill this past week pretty much cinched my decision as to whether he'd get any support from me.
Perry is looking more and more like he is going to run, for Sarah the reverse it true.
I know Perry certainly has a great economic track record to run on, but something still bothers me about him.
I think it’s the hair. I always said don’t trust a man with perfect hair. You’ve heard of a barbershop quartet? Perry, Romney and John Edwards could be a salon trio
My heart is with Sarah Palin. I think she has the right ideas and the perfect love of country that we need in a President right now. I really hope she runs. It would be great to watch liberal and media heads explode when she wins.
Why do they say that? Why would she do the bus tour, the movie premiere, speeches, etc?
I have no idea!
What on earth makes you say that, Clairity?
Ya know, whenever I want to know who is an unapologetic conservative, who has been elevated to near-hero status amongst the tea party, I always turn to the Washington Post. /
I assume that you are a new Clarity, not the old Clarity?
Regardless of the merits of Perry, or Bachmann, or Cain, or anyone, the only Reagan that we have seen in American politics since Reagan (and generations before), is Governor Sarah Palin.
Being like Reagan means a whole heck of a lot more than being conservative, it is something more entirely, it is a bigger than life persona that has an American vision, a conservative vision, that can wrestle hand to hand with this government and it’s legislative branch and give strong enough leadership to take us somewhere new, to a place that we haven’t even thought to talk about yet in our day to day politics.
Perry in a normal year, may be a good option among the Doles, and McCains, and the Romneys, but he is nowhere near being a great conservative leader, a genetic, in his bones conservative, a charasmatic, energetic, game changer, a Reagan.
60-70% of the 2012 voters are just waiting for Palin to announce. Most of the people "running' right now know this, and are just in it to rake in as much in "campaign" contribution$ as they can before Palin announces and renders the issue utterly moot.
