Officers leave loaded rifle unattended on trunk of patrol car...then drives away

This is the shocking picture of a fully loaded assault rifle left unattended on the trunk of patrol car in a busy Seattle street.

The bungling officers were nowhere to be seen after leaving the AR-15 on the trunk of their patrol car outside a busy hotel and shopping street on Monday night.

Shockingly, after the officers returned, they failed to notice the menacing rifle and drove off.

It was only after a woman chased the car as it drove away, that the officers realised their mistake.

Passer-by Nick Gonzales, who photographed the shocking scene above, also alerted two bike cops after seeing the rifle at around 9 pm Monday night, describing them as being 'shocked as hell'.

Speaking to Seattlepi.com, Seattle Police spokesman Sean Whitcomb said: 'We'd really like to express our gratitude to Nick the Slog tipper who flagged down the bike officers and also a separate woman who alerted the driver of the patrol car that there was an unattended rifle on the car.

There is a chain of command investigation that will look into the circumstances that contributed to this incident.

'Just the fact that the rifle was left on a patrol car unattended is embarrassing, and people should expect more from the Police Department.'

According to the website, Seattle police keep rifles in three states; unloaded, patrol-car ready and tactical ready.

A full investigation has been launched.

The Police officers involved - highly trained and specially selected to carry the lethal weapons - have yet to be named.

Nice rifle. Amazing no one pulled their ‘hoodie’ tight and ‘liberated’ it.

When I was about 14, I got my butt kicked by my Dad for pulling a stunt similar to that. I could have accidentally shot one of my brothers.

But the police say it is the citizens that can’t be trusted with weapons.

They are going to need a new scope, at the very least.

A) I wasn't there. B) I don't wear a hoodie.

But your premise is correct. Found money in my book.

"...the menacing rifle..."

I'm surprised that evil machine didn't up and kill a bunch of innocent bystanders. I'll betcha it threatened a lot folks, though.

Someone ought to sue the cops for leaving that dangerous contraption unattended. Could'a killed somebody.

“menacing rifle”?

No sensationalized bias on display there!

Did it mug some one, threaten to shoot unless given drugs, exactly what “Menace” did the inanimate object pose?

The cops are almost as dumb as the reporter.

The Europeans still can’t get over the American gun culture. There are millions variants of those same rifles across America in average households.

A government unionist is the last person who should be given a firearm.

The Police officers involved - highly trained and specially selected to carry the lethal weapons - have yet to be named. What a JOKE.

These guys are the typical goofballs that, thankfully, infest only a small part of most military and police units.

These guys are no better than the disgraced and useless IDIOT DEA "agent", Lee Paige, who shot himself in the foot JUST AFTER stating that he was the ONLY person in the room, that he knew of, that was "professional" enough to carry a Glock 40 (actually, it's a .40 caliber Glock 22 Lee - perhaps you had your mind on the FORTY or FORTIES you drank before mishandling your weapon in a classroom full of young kids and causing a NEGLIGENT DISCHARGE and the resulting self-inflicted gunshot wound)... BOOM!

Just before shooting himself, Old lee also tried to up his bad self and skreet creds by talking about "50 Cent" and "Too Short".

He demonstrated himself worthy of a skreet name of his own... "TOO DUMB".

Seattle is not known for having the brightest PD. Last year, a cop shot a local guy for holding a tiny knife (he was whittling) less than 10 seconds after exiting his car to confront the dead guy. The cop shot the guy not for making threatening gestures with the knife, but because the guy didn't put the knife down but rather kept whittling. The in-car tape was pretty damning. The woodcarver was very well-known among downtowners, I guess. Big stink made.

Seattle has an idiot mayor and city council, and an idiot police chief (one of many PC mouth-breathers through the years). I know I should be shocked at this latest example of SPD criminal stupidity, but after living in Latte Land all these years, I am really not surprised.

Heh. In Iraq, such items are honey pots, used to justify sniping at a person who attempts to pick it up.

I wonder if it is CRIMINAL to leave a loaded weapon where a child can get it?

You forgot the most important part; the guy the cop shot was deaf.

When I was 10, I got my butt kicked too. Dad put newspaper on the floor, squatted down and showed me how to field strip a Army Colt .45. Then told me to do it. I started on it and my butt hurt and I went face-first to the floor. When asked, "What the heck?", he said I hadn't checked it to see if loaded. Seeing him take it apart/put it together did not constitute a check. 49 years later and I never forget to check...
