Michigan's Prop. 2 ruled unconstitutional: Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell is thrilled

A federal appeals court in Cincinnati on Friday struck down Michigan's Proposal 2, the ban on the consideration of race and gender when hiring public employees or enrolling students at public colleges.

The voter-approved constitutional amendments burdens minorities and violates the U.S. Constitution, the court said in its 2-1 decision. The court said it violates the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause.

Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell, who had suggested the city challenge the amendment after it was passed, was exultant Friday upon hearing the news of the reversal.

“Wow! Wow! Wow!” Heartwell said. “It confirms the belief that many of us have that for us to advance as a state, we need to be able to advance all people.

“Racial discrimination is a reality in the state of Michigan and affirmative action is a viable tool to defeat racism.”

In the wake of Proposal 2, the city has dismantled and re-purposed much of its Equal Opportunity Departement.

Heartwell said he will favor reviewing the department and city policies to “align them with the new post 6th Circuit decision environment.”

It is a fairly conservative city as urban areas go but urban conservative vs rural conservative are two different animals.

Dick DeVos, former GOP candidate for governor (and head of AMWAY) is headquartered in Grand Rapids. His brother in law is the founder of Blackwater.

The Michigan legislature and Governorship are now run by Republicans. The Courts are the only source of liberal power, and the liberals intend to milk it for whatever they can.

Who voted for the law in the first place?

In the last election we took the Governor’s mansion, attorney general’s seat, secretary of state, two more US house seats, held one and gained another conservative seat on the state supreme court, solidified our hold in the state house and gained control of the state senate. Of our 83 counties, less than 10 consistently vote democrat. The rout here was probably greater than anywhere else in the country in the last election.

The fact is that this suit has been going on for several years. Our voter ID law spent several years in court before coming into effect a few years ago. (And now the democrats want Eric Holder to “investigate” that.)

Michigan is doing it’s best to crawl out from under the shadow of socialist Detroit—and doing a good job of it.
But if you have no control over your major cities thus giving liberal politicians with standing access to Leftist courts, then what have you?
Not much.
That Grand Rapids mayor should be made an example of or the Michigan GOP will rank with the California GOP—well intentioned but well neutered.

This is the stupidest decision I have ever seen.

“We need racism, because not being racist damages someone.”

OK - we should all take them at their word. Racism is now legal and expected.

Who wants to be the forst business in Michigan to discriminate based on skin color - maybe a restaurant - “different prices for blacks and whites”.

After all - it is the law for the state.

Where do you live in Michigan? I moved to Orlando 28 years ago. If it weren’t for my job and the fact that my wife was born here and won’t move, I’d consider moving back to Michigan.

Yet anther reason why the 14th amendment is one of the most carelessly written and reckless of all amendment to the Federal Constitution and should be either repealed or ignored(given the way it was “Ratified” under the gun.)

Federal employees in black robes have successfully managed to make the carelessly written Amendment to serves the exact opposite propose even its equally reckless its writers intended.

Mother Nature’s formula:

natural selection x evolution = undeniable fact of life.

Conclusion- The truth is not racist.
