Vice President Biden to teachers: ‘You are not the problem’
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | July 3, 2011 | Rachel Rice

Teachers aren’t to blame for the nation’s budget problems, Vice President Biden told the nation’s largest teachers union on Sunday.

Speaking to thousands of educators attending the National Education Association annual meeting at McCormick Place, Biden also declared, “None of us would be in the positions we are today — not me, not Barack, not Michelle . . . if not for the inspiration, love and guidance of at least one or two teachers,” Biden said, mentioning President Obama and his wife. He told the crowd how when he was young, he stuttered so badly that he couldn’t even say his own name, and his elementary school teachers helped turn that around.

Biden also spoke out strongly against the policies of the Republican Party. “There is an organized effort in this country to place the blame of the budget shortfall squarely on educators. And it is one of the biggest scams in American history.”

He chastised the Republican Party, saying that they were disregarding the sacrifices of teachers. “We should be embracing you, not pushing you away,” Biden said. “You are not the problem.”

His speech was well-received. Karen Brieschke of the Rockford (Illinois) Education Association, called the speech “spectacular.”

“The nation needs to pay attention to the assault on public education and our children,” Brieschke said.

The speech took place the day before the union’s vote on whether to support Obama’s re-election campaign.

Is a vote really, really necessary?

Yes, Mr. Biden, that was a time before we had Teacher’s Unions.

Teachers do not generate revenue; rather, they consume revenue generated from other sources.

In my company, revenue consumers are always viewed as a problem.

However, government exists to pervert the natural working of the market. As such, revenue consumers are exalted and revenue producers are vilified.

Kinda of hard to fix ‘the schools’ when you REFUSE to identify the main problem - TEACHERS.

I have to agree with Joe Biden.

Sister Agnes,Sister Theresa, Sister Veronica, Sister Maureen, Sister Dorthy,ALL, were very instrumental in my success in life.

Of course, each of these dedicated nuns LOATHED communism, were teachers FIRST, loved children and never belonged to any union unless one considers the Roman Catholic Church an organized sub-section of the NEA.

Well Mr. Biden, it’s like this....in NY State, tax revenues from Wall St. profits accounted for 20% of total revenues.
Therefore, 20% of school funds came from this source as well.

The housing crash spurred the recession - and the drop in Wall St. profits as well.

If it weren’t for liberal economic insanity - NY would not have to hand out pink slips to teachers.

Oh! And last year’s union handout to “save teachers jobs” ???

The unions used it for the older wealthier teachers - to make sure they retire in peace and serenity.
Pink slips still were handed out to younger, poorer teachers who now do not have a pension.

Teachers, by and large, are not the problem. Rat loving and thuggish teacher's union are. They ‘ain't’ for the children.

I found this nifty little stitched note in an old classroom display in a museum a couple weeks ago.

Seems that teachers were once expected to have responsibilities.

She will lay aside a goodly sum of her earnings, for her benefit during her declining years SO THAT SHE WILL NOT BECOME A BURDEN ON SOCIETY.

The truth is, the main problem is actually the STUDENTS. Kids raised under a certain cultural mindset that says learning’ is not cool, and seeing their own fatherless households headed by women on welfare.

Well, no sh** Plugs. It's the UNIONS, not the teachers. Oh, and dip-sticks like you who haven't the testicular fortitude to speak the truth. No wonder Obama's gonna dump you for a younger, prettier cigar-store indian.

Still the teachers - they’re the ones that have empowered Dems to create and maintain the welfare state...which, of course, has given us the social problems that we deal with.

I’m SICK of giving them a free pass. When they start supporting Republicans, I’ll start respecting them.

Bleats the threatened communist "educator."

How about we pay attention to the assault on our children through public education instead, hmmm?

Good point about private schools. My wife treasures her days in Catholic grade and high school. Her family had financial problems during her 10th grade. She graduated local high school at 16. Started College at 16. She was exempt from nearly every test her senior year here she says as does her family, as she was that far ahead from private school. That is worth it. Those results are what we need.
