Ahmed Altaie and Bowe Bergdahlone born 1965 in Baghdad, the other two decades later in Hailey, Idahowouldn't seem to have much in common. But this weekend, as Americans take to beaches and barbeques to celebrate our independence, Messrs. Altaie and Bergdahl share a unique, practically unknown bond: They are the only two U.S. soldiers currently held captive as prisoners of war.
Over the past decade, the U.S. has deployed more than two million troops abroad, with hundreds of thousands in war zones at any one time. Yet in a sign of how much warfare has changed since the time of Thucydides, Grant or even Westmoreland, prisoners of war in Afghanistan and Iraq have been few in number and low in profile. Today there is one in each theater, an unusual symmetry that seems to magnify the solitude and difficulty of their plights.

Simple carpet bombing demo, with threat of annihilation of bagdad could have fixed that. But then again, I’m crazy.
“They are the only two U.S. soldiers currently held captive as prisoners of war.”
At east the only two the government will admit to.
We hould be ripping tht country apart looking for these men..
Where are the nightly Days In Captivity Counts on the nightly news, as with the Iran hostages?
The media doesn’t care about members of the military.
Do we know that Bergdahl is a prisioner?
Yes, it was thought he was dead until pictures of him surfaced a short time ago.
Shame on W's Admin for these two missing, and shame on Admins. handling Vietnam's missing.
vaudine
What about all the POW’s whose death warrants McCain and Kerry signed when they held those disgraceful Senate POW hearings and in spite of overwhelming evidence and the pleas of family members, both insisted there were no more POWs. That was a sad day in America’s history. Both those despicable traitors continue to live their ostentasious lifestyles, high offices and money to burn while their fellow countrymen suffered and were no doubt tortured and left to rot because of their heartlessness. Neither McCain or Kerry show a shred of remorse for those abandoned POWs, but their day will come when they stand before God.
Don’t EVER depend on the U.S. Government to free prisoners of war. They left too many in Vietnam and turned their backs.
Politicians only look to the next election........
Amen, brother.
Very true.
Sadly, there are those who also think this government will hold itself accountable for its domestic crimes like this “Gunwalker” scandal as well.
That's exactly what I was thinking of.
Along with the MIA's and questionable KIA's from Korea.
Yes, but I understand that he went into enemy hands on his own - was not captured.
From what I’ve read he was lured off base by some Afghan Army who then turned him over to the Taliban. Stupid to go off base by himself but not voluntary.
