A police officer has been fired after allegedly losing his temper at a cook-off and throwing a tear gas grenade at a rival team - many of whom were military amputees.
Mike Hamby, 52, could face criminal charges for the drunken attack, which happened at this year's Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo BBQ Cook-Off in Texas.
Several members of the team were left vomiting and with burning eyes after Hamby, an officer with 30 years service, allegedly flung a military-style 'clear-out' grenade into their tent.
Hamby, who was off-duty, had been drinking before the incident in February, according to police documents.
He was competing on behalf of the Pitt and Spitts Barbecue team, who had fallen out with Hamby's Fayette County Cookers the night before. The next day Hamby became so enraged with his rivals, who included a number of wheelchair-bound military veterans, that he allegedly threw a canister of tear gas at them.

A deputy in my county got caught by the Sheriff going off his patrol route during work hours to get a little “afternoon delight” or perform work at his side business. The Sheriff had GPS evidence and everything. Dude not only wouldn’t resign, he fought the case all the way at the merit commission.
Stupid POS is lucky nobody died over it, and needs to undergo the same treatment as if his act were committed by a civilian.
Mid-80s on Okinawa, some folks had a tear gas grenade in a nightclub called Apple House. Um well OK, it was assumed real early on that it was American servicemen who were tossing/kicking the thing around between them when it “went off” and filled the club with teargas.
IIRC, the ensuing panic resulted in numerous injuries and one trampling death.
You better believe American commanders went on a hunt to find the culprit(s). We were told it had made news in the States as an international incident. Dunno what came of the investigation, but the US military would have turned over the idiots to the tender mercies of the Okinawan authorities if caught. So we believed, anyway.
