A police officer has been fired after allegedly losing his temper at a cook-off and throwing a tear gas grenade at a rival team - many of whom were military amputees.
Mike Hamby, 52, could face criminal charges for the drunken attack, which happened at this year's Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo BBQ Cook-Off in Texas.
Several members of the team were left vomiting and with burning eyes after Hamby, an officer with 30 years service, allegedly flung a military-style 'clear-out' grenade into their tent.
Hamby, who was off-duty, had been drinking before the incident in February, according to police documents.
He was competing on behalf of the Pitt and Spitts Barbecue team, who had fallen out with Hamby's Fayette County Cookers the night before. The next day Hamby became so enraged with his rivals, who included a number of wheelchair-bound military veterans, that he allegedly threw a canister of tear gas at them.

This incident occurred in March. Rather than listen to “reporting” from tabloids across the pond, why not get information that is much more detailed from here in the States?

My hubby knew this guy when he lived in Houston about 20 years ago. He was a real “nutcase” then. Seems not much has changed.
Could? COULD?? He needs to be fired, lose his pension, do prison time. Definite. No coulds.
Yeah, don't think I'll try to crack any jokes about this one, considering who the victims were. It was an especially cowardly and contemptible attack.

HPD sources familiar with the investigation said Officer Mike Hamby, 51, then admitted to that senior ranking HPD officer that he had set off the tear gas to retaliate against people inside that tent, whom Hamby felt had made remarks against the military. Hamby's admission to the senior ranking officer is included as part of the HPD Internal Affairs Division investigation, according to sources. Hamby could not be reached for comment by phone or e-mail. "I just hope the officer realizes what he did and has to pay for the actions he committed," said the witness. Hamby became a Houston police officer in December 1980, most recently assigned to the Burglary and Theft Division. He was relieved of duty with pay, with the department saying he is accused of criminal wrongdoing. An elected board member of the Houston Police Officers' Union, Hamby wrote on his online profile that he served 10 years as a Marine reservist. His profile also mentioned that he "loves hunting and barbecuing." He wrote that he serves on the union's barbecue team, as well as another group comprised mostly of military personnel. Sources close to the Internal Affairs case told Local 2 Investigates that
Hamby was attending the party inside a tent known as "Pits and Spits." Several amputees and military veterans were being honored at an event in that tent when Hamby reportedly said he heard others in a neighboring booth bad-mouthing the military, according to the Internal Affairs complaint.
