Perry Breaks With a Fellow Texan: Bush
New York Times ^ | July 5, 2011 | JIM RUTENBERG and JEFF ZELENY

Posted on 07/05/2011 9:15:40 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

AUSTIN, Tex. — Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican contemplating a presidential run, shares many attributes with the last man who ran for president from here, his predecessor and onetime patron, George W. Bush. He has the same straight-legged Texas swagger; the down-home, clipped speaking style; the desert-baked conservatism.

But in recent years, Mr. Perry has broken politically with Mr. Bush, questioning his credentials as a fiscal conservative, accusing him of going on “a big government binge” and playing down some of Mr. Bush’s accomplishments in Texas in light of his own.

Mr. Perry’s public statements exposed a long-simmering rivalry that had been little known outside of the political fraternity here but underscores the rightward drift of the Republican Party since Mr. Bush was president. More acutely, Mr. Perry’s criticism holds potential peril and benefit for him should he decide to mount a presidential campaign, allowing him to establish an identity distinct from Mr. Bush but risking a guerrilla campaign against him by the former president’s inner circle.

Mr. Perry, whose aides say will make a decision within weeks, has been meeting around the country with potential fund-raisers, and last week went to Colorado for a gathering of prominent conservative rainmakers held by members of the Koch family, which helped finance the Tea Party movement.....

On government spending, immigration and education, Mr. Perry’s criticisms of Mr. Bush have given him cachet with conservatives, especially with Tea Party voters who blame the former president for allowing spending and the reach of government to grow rapidly.

Those criticisms have burnished the Perry image as less prone to ideological compromise or a fuzzy “compassionate” brand of conservatism, an appealing trait to those Republican primary voters seeking purity in their nominee....

And yet, just like GWB, all of his actions point to an Open-Borders globalist.

Need proof?

He was a big supporter of GWB's and John McCain's push to provide Amnesty to illegals.

Here are the facts:

He came out against AZ1070.

Perry’s real position on immigration does not seem to be a tough one.

This year the legislature in Texas killed proposals that could have reached his desk and forced him to put his signature on some sort of action against illegals.

Southern definition of a Yankee: referring to people originating in the northeastern United States, or still more narrowly New England, where application of the term is largely restricted to descendants of the English settlers of the region.

Southern definition of a damn Yankee: A Yankee that stays.

Bush is the latter.

I am not given to clicking thru to NYT articles so I’m going out on a limb here to predict the article says little or nothing about Perry’s decidedly un-conservative actions such as the Trans-Texas Corridor, inaction on runaway illegal immigration, and Gardasil. Perry is not a true conservative choice in this election cycle. Perry is only a conservative if you have an east-of-the-Hudson perspective.

Does that also include ex-governors who move to Arizona?

Perry took a six thousand dollar campaign contribution from the pharma company behind Guardasil sent through a group called “Women In Politics.”

As governor, Perry proposed requiring 11 year and 12 year old girls to be injected with Guardasil. The drug is a vaccine against the sexually transmitted HPV virus.

Then the grassroots got angry that he would make a vaccine against a sexually transmitted disease mandatory for young girls (assume they are all going to have sex?????) and he backed off.

Face it. The GOP is going to nominate McRomney. Your choice will be between Romney and Obama. He has made all the needed deals and compromises needed to be nominated. Happens every time.

I have never attacked any candidate.

I don't go onto threads and bash other candidates.

I started many Sarah Palin threads.

What a RINO! Rather than going to battle against the Commie, BHO,this guy prefers to lock horns with GWB? Bush is yesterday’s mashed potatoes! You want more of the same as we’ve been getting the past 2 1/2 years, vote for Rick Perry!

Yes. It is a NYT story. But much of this is already out there. They’ve just collected it and inserted the Tea Party into the story to update it.

“Mr. Perry has broken politically with Mr. Bush, questioning his credentials as a fiscal conservative, accusing him of going on “a big government binge”

To give credit where credit is due, I have to admit that Perry distancing himself from Bush is a good thing.

I still don’t trust Perry on immigration and nanny staterism, but do credit him for realizing Bush was a disaster for conservatives.

Well, a lot about that is true, was handled in a boneheaded way.

But don't dismiss this vaccine because your daughters are chaste. Someday they may marry, but not marry a chaste man. Do you know a lot of men that come to their marriages virgin? Men carry HPV also. There is also some encouraging research about this being effective against some herpes viruses.

HPV is a virus and cannot be treated with antibiotics. You may be thinking that it's like the clap. HPV is permanent.

I'm not talking up mandatory vaccination here. But don't throw out a possibly good vaccine with your indignation with how it was managed. I happen to think that there should be an effort to get more men to take the vaccine.
