I don't want any modern day politician mucking with our Constitution; they can't see past their next election bid to be trusted to actually serve the people.
“The idea of a balanced budget amendment is great, until we get out taxes jacked up 40% to pay for the spending we cannot due without.”
Exactly. Snowe + RINOS + Democrats want THIS to happen:
STEP 1 - Pass “Balanced Budget Amendment.”
STEP 2 - Say “Oh no, we just spend 2X and we only collected 1X in taxes!”
STEP 3 - Double the tax rate (to collect 2X, enough to cover the spending you just did).
STEP 4 - Congratulations, you just balanced the budget!
Mark Levin used to rant AGAINST a balanced budget amendment, since it would just give the socialists an excuse to raise taxes to “pay for” their crazy spending and “balance the budget.”
But recently, Levin keeps RECOMMENDING a balanced budget amendment. I’m listening to him right now.
Can someone explain this switch? Is he referring to some new version of a proposed amendment?
Why amend something they don't even bother to follow to begin with?
It takes two thirds to open the constitution for amendment but once its open there’s no telling what they could do in the middle of the night.
My tagline applies here.
Let the political battles between taxing and spending be fought by a current congress, when the voters who elected them are paying the taxes they set. Deficit spending merely shifts the taxes from the voters to the future taxpayers.
You got that right, FRiend. A Constitutional Convention is an open invitation to all sorts of mischief.
It is amazing what an upcoming election will do to Sen. Olympia Snowe...
Just like McCain she is gonna start looking real conservative till she is reelected.
Worst idea in American history. What do you do if it doesn’t balance? You are FORCED to raise revenue. Suppose we must fund the wars like the ones we are funding now? Raise revenue.
While I am all about balancing the budget, cuts, etc., an amendment forcing it is just plain stupid. It isn’t a checkbook, it’s a government.
I am wondering if this isn't for some kind of political cover. They can say, see, we're serious, we proposed a balanced budget amendment to help us out. But, gee, it didn't pass, so we can't do it now...
If that's their gambit, then, well, it's just one more thing I'm getting very, very tired of. We sent these people there in 2010 to do a job. What'd they get out of the compromise CR, something like $20 billion in cuts? Peanuts compared to deficits in the trillions. Now they're talking about $2-$3 trillion reduction over 10 years on the debt ceiling compromise? Its a start, I guess, but it only solves 10-15% of the problem.
And some day Lucy won't yank the football away at the last minute. So what you are saying is that the 18th amendment was better than taking the risk of something untoward happening with the 21st and we should not look to do anything regarding the 16th and 17th amendments?
One question.
Is olympia snowe up for reelection?
Levin probably likes the votes required to raise the tax limit. Something like 2/3 or 67 votes, 60 during time of war.
lol Good call.
Only a fool trusts the bunch in DC to “fix” the constitution that they pretty much ignore now.
I’ve read the negative comments on this thread and agree.
Even if the amendment contained restraints on raising taxes and further borrowing, and even if fiddling with the Constitution were a good idea at times, it would take too long to get it through, since 3/4 of the states must pass it.
We are in an emergency situation and need faster remedy.
What about just passing legislation? I’ve heard the idea of keeping spending to a certain percentage of GNP and others.
“Is olympia snowe up for reelection?”
Yep, in 2012
It also gave us the 16th and 17th amendments. The 16th made us slaves and the 17th took away state representation to check the national government. 1913 was a very bad year.
Holy crap. Olympia the RINO sounds like a RR.
