We’re broke, so it’s gotta be cut. People who haven’t saved on their own were just plain stupid.

How about cutting Social Security and medicare benefits... FOR ALL THE FRIGGING ILLEGAL ALIENS.

Wake up, republican morons in the House. You’re about to hand the communist retard an election issue on a silver platter.

It’s a start, cutting this welfare program. But the cut is so minor as to have minimal impact on our overall impending dollar collapse. We’ll need to essentially freeze benefits while inflation reduces their value by 25% or so...that would get the program’s payouts back in line with it’s income.

But it is a start.

So now a sirloin steak will equal a half of can of dog food instead of a full can.

There’s nothing sneaky about it. It’s well justified and sensible. Do this and for those under 55 change the age at which people retire and ss will be solvent for 70 more years.

I’ve been saying for years that this would be the case. In fact, I don’t see how any of these massive entitlement programs can ever function in the long run without this sort of approach.

Socialist Insecurity checks real purchasing power has gone up and up with so called inflation adjustment. Senator Coburn is correct.

Socialist Insecurity has always been a Ponzi scheme.

Old people have younger ones to take care of them by and large. Let them work or live with them.

Social security was never meant to be a primary support mechanism for anyone.

We need to return to the time when retirement was not even in the dictionary.

While reading the first 30 or so comments, I understand why the Social Security debate is so toxic, the issue will NEVER be solved and will implode MUCH sooner than later.

I’m 44 years old, working since I’m 16, I expect not to see a dime of SS and will probably will die at my job(retirement for everyone will in the future, be considered an historic anomaly; IMHO).

Stay healthy my friends because the coming economic storm is going to kill what’s left of Social Security.

I wish they would quit using this blatant LIE. They are not cutting ANYONE”S Social Security Benefits. NOBODY ANYWHERE will recieve LESS than they do now. This will just effect the amount of the annual INCREASE people recieve.

And, I ask this, How many PRIVATE pension plans give yearly ‘Cost of Living’ increases?

Bottom line: D.C. politicians are attempting every way possible to raise revenue and cut expenditures, even if it is on the back of the elderly.

This is unadulterated bullshit.

Eliminate the Department of Education. Cut the EPA's budget by 90%. Stop giving federal "grants" to pressure groups. Stop studying cow flatulence. Deport the f'n illegals. Stop paying for anchor babies. Ad nauseum.

There are thousands of areas that could and should be cut first. The pols are pulling their standard old trick of making sure any "cuts" are first made where it hurts the public the most.

Disgusting.

How can this be? Here is the promise made in 1964!
http://www.ssa.gov/history/ssa/usa1964-2.html

Self-Supporting

“The program is designed so that contributions plus interest on the investments of the social security trust funds will be sufficient to meet all of the costs of benefits and administration, now and into the indefinite future—without any subsidy from the general funds of the Government. Both the Congress and the Executive Branch, regardless of political party in power, have scrupulously provided in advance for full financing of all liberalizations in the program.”

And here is where your FICA money goes. Read and weep!

THE OLD AGE PENSION CHECK

Roy Acuff & His Smoky Mountain Boys - 1939

When our old age pension check comes to our door,
We won’t have to dread the poor house anymore.
Though we’re old and thin and gray,
Good times will be back to stay,
When our old age pension check comes to our door.

When her old age pension check comes to her door,
Dear old grandma won’t be lonesome any more.
She’ll be waiting at the gate,
Every night she’ll have a date,
When her old age pension check comes to her door.

Grow a flowing long white beard and use a cane,
‘Cause you’re in your second childhood, don’t complain.
Life will just begin at sixty,
We’ll all feel very frisky,
When our old age pension check comes to our door.

Powder and paint will be abolished on that day,
And hoop skirts will then be brought back into play.
Painted cheeks will be the rage,
And old maids will tell their age,
When their old age pension check comes to their door.

All the drug stores will go bankrupt on that day,
For cosmetics, they will all be put away.
I’ll put a flapper on the shelf,
Get a grandma for myself,
When her old age pension check comes to her door.

There’s a man that turned this country upside-down
With his old age pension rumor going ‘round.
If you want in on the fun,
Send your dime to Washington,
And that old age pension man will be around.

I’ve never understood the adjusting for inflation at all.Your benefits should just be what they are no raise ever.Your paycheck never just goes up automatically because it costs more to live why should ss?

They found a way to cut benefits without sneaking around. They simply haven’t paid retirees any COLA increases for several years now and none appear in the offing.

Nothing sneaky about that. Just a middle digit extended while paying for Palesinian bills, foreign aid and other things overseas I’m not in favor of.

So far as I can see, seniors are the only section of society that are part of a shared sacrifice. Not complaining, but would like to see Congress, government unions, the Defense Dept, Education department, etc. join us.

Let us all please remember that it was Lyndon Baines Johnson that changed the rules and put the Social Security monies into the general revenue fund. Used it to fund the Great Society.

Thanks Lyndon. By the way is it really hot down there?

The reality is it doesn't matter what they do or how they do it. Right now the ratio of those working to pay for those on entitlement benefits is about 2.5 to 1.
Now what happens when 50 to 70 million baby boomers out of a population of 311 million start hitting retirement and in about 10 years the vast majority are there?
There will not be enough workers to pay for it.
Now if we had a population of say 600 million then we might just be able to weather the storm and still make the system work. But we don't and with debt along with what I just laid out we are headed for a collapse. The only question remaining is when it happens.
