Grassley would be supportive of a special prosecutor in ‘Gunwalker’

Sen. Charles Grassley, (R-Iowa) ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said on a radio interview today, while he’s not calling for a special prosecutor to investigate Operation Fast and Furious, the failed operation to track guns across the Mexican border, he would be supportive if Chairman Darrell Issa, (R-Calif.) of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform called for one.

In the interview on the Steve Gill Show, he had a couple of other interesting things to say.

He said three things came out of the interviews with Ken Melson, the Acting Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

1. It wasn’t just an ATF operation. FBI and DEA were involved and knew about the operation.

2. This wasn’t controlled by ATF, the U.S. Attorney in Phoenix was in charge.

3. Contrary to the information the investigators had been given by letter, everyone inolved knew guns were going across the border.

Listen to the interview here.

good question. A special prosecuter can be called for by the Attorney General or Congress. Next question is does it have to go to a vote in Congress or can just any congresscritter ask for one? We certainly can’t let Holder assign one.

My question as well. Who has the power to see that a Special Prosecutor is appointed?

It seems weaselly to me too, but maybe there is some sort of protocol that the Senate stays out of House business. I wouldn’t worry though. Issa is itching to go after the administration on this for good reason.

BTW, Grassley is still alive? This dude is a spineless POS. Why doesn’t he retire and fully disappear?

Hmmm...just googling around with ‘special prosecuter’ definition and it says a head of state can appoint one as well. I wonder if Jan Brewer could ask for one?

Republicans tried to get Holder to appoint one on the Sestak debacle

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2010/05/exclusive-senate-judiciary-committee-republicans-atorney-general-eric-holder-special-prosecutor-sestak-job-offer.html

Someone had better be calling for one in Gunwalker or I swear every single Republican needs to be thrown out of office.

Grassley isn’t calling for one..well, why the hell not.

Exactly!

“We certainly can’t let Holder assign one.”

Moreover, I am even concerned about who the Repubs might select. Issa needs to be brought into any discussion.

This story is flying so low under the radar that even Rush doesn’t understand its implications. If the conservative talk show hosts don’t get it, who will inform the public? Levin covered it yesterday, & he would be a natural to educate the public on the laws that were broken. I was told that Chris Plante covered it today (haven’t downloaded yet).

[BTW, Penelopesire, have you ever listened to his program?]

I posted the below on the Rush thread today when he mentioned the $ connection to Stimulus:

“I don’t think Rush understands the implications of F & F yet. Talking off headlines, and then he moves on. Hasn’t done his homework. His staff needs to write up a detailed report so he can get up to speed.”

OK, Maybe everyone already knows this, but I don't see references to this skimming the threads, but Holder gave a speech on it, in Mexico, in 2009.

Unaware my butt.

While swearing they’re both pure as nuns,
seems Obozo and Holder ran guns.
Down to old Mexico
did these firearms go
and their hubristic plot simply stuns.

Issa on Hannity radio now:

Tearing into Holder.

Said Melson’s attorney never stopped him in the closed-door testimony.

Said there have been many whistle-blowers.

Issa gets heavily redacted forms from Justice (some with zero info) and they say they have complied. Issa gets the same unredacted forms from other sources and compares. Says no reason for the redactions.

Mexico agents kept in the dark. When they would plug in the weapons number, they would get a “network error.”

I rarely listen to Hannity. Does he have transcripts? Issa’s interview should be transcribed.

I disagree. Once a Special Prosecutor takes over, there will be no further Congressional hearings. This crime needs to be exploited and kept in public view.

Fast and Furious is a gift from Obama we should not squander. I hope Issa slow walks his inquiry. Plan the hearings and revelations such that a Contempt of Congress citation is issued against Holder next August. Follow that with his prosecution and careful leaks that implicate Obama all the way up to the election.

Two can play the October surprise game. Let's do it.

From your DOJ link, April 2 2009:

"Last week, our administration launched a major new effort to break the backs of the cartels. My department is committing 100 new ATF personnel to the Southwest border in the next 100 days to supplement our ongoing Project Gunrunner, DEA is adding 16 new positions on the border, as well as mobile enforcement teams, and the FBI is creating a new intelligence group focusing on kidnapping and extortion. DHS is making similar commitments, as Secretary Napolitano will detail."

Oh.
