Bachmann Stands By Marriage Pact That Links Slavery to Black Family Values
By Stephen Clark
Published July 09, 2011

Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann is standing firm behind a pledge she signed Thursday that promotes marriage and social conservative values, but includes a passage that suggests black families were in better shape during slavery.

The Family Leader, an Iowa-based conservative group led by Bob Vander Plaats, issued the pledge formally called, "The Marriage Vow – A Declaration of Dependence Upon Marriage and Family."

The two page document condemns gay marriage, abortion, pornography and infidelity. But perhaps the most controversial part is found in the preamble where the state of the black family in the slave era is compared to today.

"Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American baby born after the election of the USA's first African-American President," the document reads.

I don’t see that implication at all. I think its a straight forward factual comparison of the black “family” , its erosion, culminating in the Obama era failures.

Its not about success or getting ahead, its describing a tragic failure in the family.

 Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African- American baby born after the election of the USA‟s first African-American President.

 LBJ‟s 1965 War on Poverty was triggered in part by the famous “Moynihan Report” finding that the black out-of-wedlock birthrate had hit 26%; today, the white rate exceeds that, the overall rate is 41%, and over 70% of African-American babies are born to single parents – a prime sociological indicator for poverty, pathology and prison regardless of race or ethnicity.

The truth. .....something the majority of the electorate shrinks from. Much respect to Bachmann for standing with it unashamedly.

It's a poor choice of words and the subject of slavery was unnecessary to make the point.

It would have been more accurate and more effective to point out that the Black family has been sabotaged by Marxists (use the word "socialists") from the time communists began gaining strength in the US (the 1920's), that properly pins the blame on the Rats.

No - not B.S.

My relatives experienced, first hand, in New Orleans how poorly the Irish were treated. There was a need for ditch digging and since there was an outbreak of disease that killed some of those who were digging, the Irish were substituted as replacements for the digging. The owners did not want to loose their investment in their slaves, so the Irish were used.

We have documented proof of this! It took some time for the Irish to pull themselves up, but they did.

Can someone tell me what is inaccurate in this statement?

For years, Thomas Sowell has a made similar point, saying that welfare has done more harm to the black family than slavery.

However, that Bachmann would sign a pledge with such statements shows she is as stupid as she appears.

What it proves is she has more guts to stand on conservative principles than other candidates.

It's disgusting Bachmann haters have to attack her for doing the right thing.

I don’t see a single inaccurate or stupid thing about this. It’s true,,, and until we can openly say things that are true,, we will never fix this damaged nation.

Seeing and knowing political truth,, and being forbidden to speak it, is more in line with the USSR mentality. Read about it,, people there speak endlessly of the maddening nature of not being able to say what was right before your eyes.

Being from the South and Irish decent, as deplorable as the Irish immigrant’s hardship, it is hardly comparible to being forced to work for nothing and live by another person’s whims in slavery.

There was no need in including that statement in this pledge. Bachmann signing was ill-considered, similarily to other faux pas the lady has made. Her and others need to quit “opening mouth and dis-engage brain”. It does not add to our perception of their steadiness at the helm.

Some conservatives don’t seem to have much common sense, including some at FR.

And to allude that blacks were better off, in any way, under slavery...borders on racism, at least.

So, Walter Williams is a racist for making this comment>

“The welfare state has done to black Americans what slavery couldn’t do, what Jim Crow couldn’t do, what the harshest racism couldn’t do,” Mr. Williams says. “And that is to destroy the black family.”

The comparison is stupid, and offensive. Slavery is totally anomalous in a free society. . Those families were not free agents. A better one would have been to compare today with 1960. Free blacks in 1960 were doing much better. Even with the burden of racial segregation, blacks were better able to maintain family life.

Its a true statement. The Dems just don’t want the blacks to hear it and understand it.

Oh I see, we are soo soo scared of what “liberals will think about us” still that we should never sign on to a statement of objective truth.

It's amazing how politically-correct the Bachmann haters get in order to attack her.

Yes, but those Irishmen could have refused, and walked away and nobody could have forced them down into that ditch. And they could have walked in several directions and homesteaded,,

As immigrants to America, the Irish were treated poorly. Employment ads began to contain the phrase, “Irish need not apply.” Boarding houses and other public establishments displayed signs which read, “ No dogs or Irish allowed.”

The Irish were blamed for outbreaks of disease. Anti-Irish and anti-Catholic riots broke out in New York and Boston. Churches, convents and orphanages were attacked and burned. Black slaves were more highly regarded than the Irish.

While I fully agree that slavery was a dark moment for us, that would also include the extremely poor treatment of the Irish. And the Irish were forced to work for nothing. An Irish slave did not command the price that others did.

Michelle Bachman is one hundred times the decent person than the idiot rinos and democrats. Because she stands for all that is moral and decent, she is attacked.

As WastedYears said, it's a two inch grouping at 1,000 yards, but by signing a statement with that type of language in it, Michele Bachmann reveals a dreadful lack of political savvy.

She just gave the left a bludgeon to whack her over the head with.
