The time for going to war with Iran was 5-6 years ago. They now have enough radioactive material to be considered a nuclear threat, even if it’s just a large-scale dirty bomb. So barring a 100% guaranteed first-strike destruction and isolation of all their nuclear capability, we are beyond the window to keep them from proliferating.
We painted ourselves into a corner in Iraq and Afghanistan by prosecuting them as police-actions instead of wars. Hindsight is 20/20 of course.
