A new Indiana law will help pharmacists and police track sales of cold medicines in real time as the state pushes forward with efforts to stop those making and dealing meth...

"There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws."
Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand
I really don’t know what to do about meth. Tracking cold medicine seems pretty ridiculous but meth addicts can be pretty dangerous.
In Oregon, over-the-counter sales of psuedoephedrine was banned. All it did was to shut down the small labs. Now the state is inundated with meth that is being cooked by Mexican gangs, from material they bring in from Mexico.
Now I hear that MO is talking about requiring a Dr prescription in order to buy it.

Malarkey, based on the simple fact that while theoretically at least, such drugs could be obtained from such medicines, in miniscule amounts; practically speaking, no illegal drug maker would seriously consider doing it that way.
To start with, imagine taking all the tablets in a box of such a drug and grinding them up. Maybe a quarter ounce of powder? Now multiply it by the number of boxes someone would need to get, say, a pound of that powder, which is what a typical drug maker would need.
Hint, there are 16 dry ounces to a pound, so the drug maker would have to buy a minimum of 64 boxes.
They already do that here in CA.
Having said that, the absurd “war on drugs” is no more than an excuse the State uses to do more of what it wants.
I can live with legal marijuana but meth is a whole different ballgame and I won’t claim to have any answers on how to deal with it. That said, overregulation of cold meds isn’t the way to deal with it.
The guy who killed 7 people in Grand Rapids Michigan the other night is believed to have been on meth.
Same here. They are already doing this in NY and they treat me like a criminal when I want to get the only thing that puts a dent in my sinus congestion. Once a year.
This approach is pure BS from the DEA and its clowns. If you don’t believe in would cops give us a police state if given the chance, hang with this bunch for a short time. They make the BATF look good.
Thanks in part to laws like this, most meth is now made in Mexico where the ingredients can be purchased bulk rather than refined from cold tablets in ridiculously small quantities.
It is brought across the border by undocumented pharmacists. This law will probably help put a stop to Indiana’s meth cooks, but put more money in the hands of Mexican cartels.
Not sure what can be done about meth. Not even stiff prison sentences seem to be a deterrent.
