DETROIT (AP) -- The Chevrolet Cruze, the most popular car in the U.S. last month, will come in a diesel version that could boost gas mileage to around 50 mpg, two people briefed on General Motors Co. product plans said Monday.

My thoughts exactly. I don't care if it gets 200 mpg and costs less than a gallon of diesel. I will not buy another GM product, ever, for any reason. I am boycotting that corrupt organization until they die a richly deserved death.
Yes. The 4.5L Duramax would be kicking butt right now if they had gone with it.
My ride share mate bought one of those Olds Diesels. We were late for work 8X. Everything that could go wrong went wrong -— Blown head gaskets 4X; Blown pad gasket 3X; Quit fuel pump 1X. He parked it. I drove my good old Chevette for the next 2 years.
I wish VW would have sold the Lupo over here when they were manufacturing them up until 2005. They get up to 78mpg.

That worked out real well last time.
On the other hand, some people know how to build one.
That would be an amazing engineering accomplishment since it doesn't use gas.
Once my current GM product bites the dust, I hope that Ford will have introduced a diesel-powered Focus. I will never buy GM again.
My sentiments exactly. I’m trying to figure out how to take advantage of my $3,000 accumulated on my GM card without actually having to by another Government Motors vehicle.
Last year while in Europe, I drove a Ford C-Max (I think it’s now sold here under the Focus name, specifically the 4-door hatchback model) with the diesel and 5-speed manual. Nice driving little car; I’d certainly consider buying one if offered here in that configuration.
I remember those with the 350 swap. The things went like raped apes.
I’ve had the same electrical issues with my last two GM products, and they don’t even share the same platform (Bravada and Grand Prix). Ford has made great quality control improvements, and the Focus is a tough little booger.
I’d bet your more likely to see a diesel festiva than a focus.
I’d buy one.
A GM diesel? (a GM anything) no fricking way.
BTW ford was going to do a V6 power stroke. It died a slow death in the medium duty cab overs. I don’t think they could get it to run clean enough to put in a F150.

This may be the new skunkworks GM diesel I read about a couple years ago. If so, it was redesigned from the ground up, making it a much smaller engine. Apparently, the final design was radically different than any other diesel engine ever designed.
It all sounded really cool, but then GM hit the skids.
No matter how cool it is, I won’t buy it. The quality of the car it would go into would be crud and the unions, GM and 0bama will be justified for their sick work.
Go pound sand, GM.
I’ve owned many GM automobiles throughout my life but I’ll never own another. I just helped my daughter buy a Toyota. What a beautiful car.
Agree.... Folks hypermile those with few mods an a light foot up to an or near 60mpg around here where cruise control an 50 miles between towns is the norm.
One guy stripped a golf tdi of all excess weight an did some poorboy engineering an ground effects modifications for his commuter car. He left AC/Heater defrost an XM sat radio. Bridgestone runflat tires so he could dump the spare an jack.
I think he removed backseats an replaced his fuel tank as well....
I drive a 06 Cummins dodge 4x4 crew cab every day an can milk about 22mpg with a light touch on the pedal an use of cruise control but if fuel gets much worse I’m gonna build a hypermile tdi commuter car as well.....
Neighbor has a Nissan 350Z with a blown engine that is just begging for an oil burner to get that rice smell out if it....:o)
“Will the diesel model include the steering wheel?”
Part of your overall gas mileage savings—if you can’t drive it, you get better MPG.
“I hope that Ford will have introduced a diesel-powered Focus.” There’s a disel powered focus since the focus is sold, but only on the other side of the pond.
There are only three companies capable of producing reliable cars with automatic transmission that withstand the massive torque of diesel engines: VW , Merc and BMW.
All other diesels should be bought with a manual gear box instead. So: No i won’t buy a GM diesel without a manual gear box.
