The half-brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai has been killed in an assassination attempt, officials say.
Ahmad Wali Karzai, the younger half-brother of the Afghan president and leader of the Kandahar Provincial Council, was shot dead, presidential spokesmen Waheed Omar told the BBC.
Initial reports suggest he was shot by his bodyguard in his house in Kandahar.
A controversial politician, some saw him as a defender of Pashtun rights.
Critics said he was a warlord mired in corruption who was openly involved in the drugs trade and had a personal militia at his disposal.
The president repeatedly defended him, denouncing accusations that his brother was involved in criminal activities.
He was a staunch ally of US and allied forces in Afghanistan.
The body of Ahmad Wali Karzai, who was born in 1961, has been taken to a nearby hospital, says the BBC's Quentin Sommerville in Kabul.
International forces in Afghanistan have expressed shock at the killing. There has been no word yet from the Afghan president himself.

Whew, thank goodness it was only an “attempt.”
Sounds like it could qualify as an Obamaism...
It’s actually good reporting. They reported what the government was reporting. They reported that the government reported the assassination attempt and that the guy died in it.
I’d rather this type of reporting than what we usually get: digested and full of unwarranted inferences.
Love triangle.
And we are nation building there.
If Hamid Karzai didn't have our troops for security, he'd have been dead by an insider years ago, like his father and any other Pakhtun male that gains power.
What our leadership fails to understand about the Pakhtun is that they have no understanding or respect for authority, they only respond to their fear of power. It is a primitive tribal society that believes in political anarchy.
BTW, 18 deminers there, people risking their lives to find buried mines that every Afghan is stepping on, were beheaded yesterday.
Here is a detailed article about the assassination and a 30 second news video. His bodyguard and “friend” was the assassin and it was during a meeting in his well fortified home. This could be a good thing (corruption reputation) or a bad thing (he knew everything and everyone in his area).

One dangerous failing of State is that for all their talk of diversity and multiculturalism they naively believe that everyone is just like us.
It is a deadly opinion.
