Dog found with teeth sawed off [dog-fighting bait dog]

WEST COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The people at PETS, Inc. see animals come through the door in bad shape everyday, but some there say this one takes the cake.

A dog they've named "Cowboy," walked in their doors timidly Saturday with a tennis ball in his mouth, bite wounds from the nose to tail, underweight and dehydrated. When they opened his mouth to determine his age, they were shocked to see that all of his teeth had been broken or sawed off, indicating that he had been used as a "bait dog" to train juvenile Pit Bulls for fighting.

The skinny Pit Bull was found on Friday on Sandy Run Road in Gaston, an area that has produced other abused dogs, according to PETS, Inc. Cowboy's neck has a gray ring of broken hair typical of a dog who has struggled against a chain, shelter employees said.

When he first got to PETS, Inc., Cowboy paid no attention to the employees or to any of the other dogs in the room.

"It's just an amazing thing that a dog could have been through as much as he's been through and still be so accepting and gentle with people," said Jane Brundage. He was solely focused on the tennis ball that was given to him by the young woman who found him.

A neighbor has two dogs that were rescued. One was a German Shepherd who bounced back just great. The other was a dog that was obviously badly beaten by its previous owner, likely a male since she shows a lot of fear toward males. So she sees me, gets very defensive, but once in a while it just clicks - “You mean you’re a person who wants to pet me and love me, not beat me?!?!” (I have to use the squeaky voice when talking to her). That’s when she gets really hyper and starts jumping. The previous owner of that dog needs tire iron therapy.

People who abuse animals or “train” them to be killers........makes me weep with sadness. I hope that there is a very special place in heaven for the victims— a place where these poor animals never again know hatred or abuse. As for the abusers, well they can beg for mercy from God, but they can’t hide whatever heart they have from him.

If they know this area is a haven for training, breeding fighting dogs, why don't they raid these places?? There are probably enough dog people on the police force who would be glad to give these cretins some “tire iron therapy”.

This poor dog. Imagine the pain it went through when it was having it's teeth filed down. I don't know many people (myself included) who would have a cavity filled without having Novocaine first much less time after time on all of them. Makes me sick to my stomach.

You are so right, but be prepared to be flamed by the pit bull/bully breed haters. You know they read of these dangerous dogs in the media...so it must be true! /s

Doesn’t that just make you ILL?? What do his actions say about the type of human being he is? That’s all I need to know.

The folks you are speaking of are busy over at this other dog thread. Pretending that the issue is over animal rights, and not violations of exisiting laws.

I have argued with the bully’s about less than that..No one will convince me that the dogs are not made to be mean..When a person plays with a dog rough then he will do the same, they have to be taught to be gentle not just the pit bulls but all of them..Heck I have been around a Chihuahua that scared me much more than a pit bull..they are so cute and then go to pet and they try and take a hand off..i am exaggerating I love those little dogs..but you know what I am getting at..

I do indeed! Seems the smaller dogs often have an “attitude” that is dangerous around anyone not of their “pack”. Sadly, because they are little the owners do nothing to curb that behavior, believing it to be “cute”, but those little pups have teeth also and can do some damage!!

I have known and interacted with a few pitties in my time — all were sweethearts, as was the Rottie a friend had. People are too credulous when it comes to the “big bad dog” reports of the media. It’s astonishing that certain FReepers, who are supposed to be very suspicious of the media in general and claim to be in other venues, have no problem believing what the media dishes out about pits. Just sayin’.

How do you know what we think of PBT types is because of “the media” and not from experience? Or at least from deduction?

I did a paper for English Comp 20 years ago on how PBTs were being basically wrongfully attacked - but I’ve wised up. There is still alot of erroneous ID (why I am absolutely against breed legislation), but basically the dogs WERE bred for fighting, and it is dangerous. Particularly dangerous are exactly the strains bred now for fighting - and don’t think they don’t trickle down into the suburban culture.

I am a German Shepherd lover, so I am very aware of people discriminating against a “viscious” breed. But even as a GS lover, I am also aware of various strains in the breed and emphasis even from responsible trainers on bite work I’m positive has left us with more GS general aggression issues than the old canard about “backyard breeders” (whom I now think might actually be the savior of the breed) ruining it. Time and again aggressive GS have the German Schutzhund-type background. When I look for a GS, I look at the behavior of the puppy 1st (yes, I like young puppies so I can mold them) - and even 6 wk pups vary in character. They are NOT strictly lumps of clay to be molded. I like to START with a good-hearted animal. Genetics DOES count - individually as well as breed-wide.

GS are not as bad as pit bull types (a type, not a breed); even aggressive GS tend to “let it go” whereas PBTs (like most terriers) are tenacious - that is the real danger.

I’ve had my old stable dominant female GS beset upon by a PBT on a walk, but the owner had him on lead so he couldn’t get to her while I sat in the doorway waiting for them to pass. She had no clue this dog wanted a fight - she was alert to him with curious tail wag, but didn’t jump into action right back (she was very well behaved, incidentally), perhaps thinking he was just playing. I did not like the way that PBT (clearly so) was behaving 1 bit.

Where there is smoke, there is fire - not all PBTs are bad, but there’s a reason for the “hype”. This is like saying that not all Moslems are bad. Sorry, but they are all much more likely to be aggressive. I think it’s riskier getting/being around a PBT and classic bulldogs and some other “just-fighting” purpose-bred breeds (rarer).

I’m sorry, but the vast majority of the posts I’ve seen from those who want the bully breeds wiped off the face of the earth are from those who have “read” that the bully breeds were dangerous. Of course that’s a slippery slope and as someone who owns a GS, you know that that breed was targeted as the “breed to hate” some years ago — along with Chows, Dobes, Rotties. Where does it end?? Apparently it doesn’t.

Where are all of the “GS gone bad” stories that made a regular appearance in the media way back when they were the “evil dog to hate”? Are we now to believe that the dogs went bad, and now have better “genes” somehow?? Sorry, I don’t buy that for a second. ID is a SERIOUS problem in the media “Beloved Family Pet Gone Cujo” stories. When tracked (by an organization whose name I forget at the moment) it was discovered that the majority were erroneous and/or that that “family dog” was actually a “resident dog” chained up in the backyard, unvetted, unneutered, unsocialized and half-starved. Yet claiming the family dog suddenly went berserk makes for a more exciting story even if it’s not accurate. When the media DOES retract their errors, they are buried in the back pages (although the original story was much closer to the front page). Coincidence? I don’t think so. Bully breeds and what are now viewed as “pit bulls” have long been a beloved family dog — to the point where they were often called “nanny dogs”. Are there some animals who don’t trust humans and never will? Yes, just as there are some humans who hate animals and always will.

My point is and remains that the vast majority of those with a completely irrational hatred of pit bulls have that view because they have little to NO experience with the bully breeds and believe what the media has been telling them. (When confronted about their “experience” their whole view is based on one bad experience or none at all and they almost always cite the many “stories” reported by the media.)

Neglected to add that dog on dog aggression does not necessarily translate to dog on human aggression, as I’m sure you know. Bully breeds were bred traditionally to fight other animals (bears, etc...) The aggression that some show against other dogs is too often seen as equivalent to aggression against human when it is not.
