President Obama on Tuesday said he cannot guarantee that retirees will receive their Social Security checks August 3 if Democrats and Republicans in Washington do not reach an agreement on reducing the deficit in the coming weeks. "I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd if we haven't resolved this issue. Because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it," Mr. Obama said in an interview with CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley, according to excerpts released by CBS News. I am pretty sure he does have the ability to see that the checks go out in time. I’m pretty sure that the president can direct what spending happens and what spending doesn’t happen.

Which departments show up and which departments stay home.

I wish he’d cut them off. For good. And stop the taxing for it. Why do so-called ‘conservatives’ support this socialist ponzi scheme?

The answer: They aren’t conservatives when it comes to their own entitlements. If they were true conservatives they’d bite the bullet, take the loss, and say ‘cancel it!!’ at the top of their lungs.

Wow. Is he predictable, or what?

And of course, his worshipers in the media will make this the top story.

He hopes elderly will flood Congress with calls to go along with his tax hikes and raising of the debt limit. Then weepy Boehner will cave.

Actually I read the other day that this is not true due to the fact that all the computers would have to be reprogrammed to NOT send out the checks. And, that it could not be done in a flash, it would take a while.

This might blow up in their faces. It may have worked in 1996 when the media had a strangle hold on the news.

A great opening for Republicans.

They need to present and publicize a prioritized list of what will be paid after the debt limit is reached.

I don’t believe he can do that, but.....this needs to get to all seniors on SS. He just lost the election in 2012. Stop all money leaving this country and do it now. Cut all programs that aren’t in line with keeping out country running. Like money going to test shrimp and parks, etc, etc.

Remember the IDF vs. PA bumper sticker?

It reminds me of the difference between liberals and conservatives with regard to budget deals. Conservatives seek to shield the weakest, while liberals want to use them as hostages for more concessions.

I envision Harry and Nancy storming to the SS offices demanding that the computers be shut off.

Exactly - within limits. By law, there is mandatory spending and discretionary spending. The problem is that with no new borrowing, the mandatory portion alone exceeds the revenue coming in. The top priority should be servicing the debt. Then the next priority should be immediate Social Security checks and Medicare payments. There is also mandatory spending to take care of our veterans

On the discretionary spending side, there will none, and all other agencies will be effectively shut down.

A bit early to play this card.

It was predicted. August 3rd is the next payday for SS, disability SS, etc. Next, they'll be sending out letters....wonder how much that will cost?

I suspect he is considering stopping the checks, and then blaming the Republicans. Yes, he would stoop that low. It’s the same fertilizer going on here in Minnesota with Crazy Eyes Dayton.
