Norquist: Time to Force Obama’s Hand (Commenting on McConnell's new proposal
National Review ^ | July 12th | Andrew Stiles

Posted on 07/12/2011 3:41:15 PM PDT by Halfmanhalfamazing

Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, says he supports Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's "contingency plan" designed to force President Obama to assume nearly all of the responsibility for raising the debt ceiling.

"Obama is playing politics," Norquist tells National Review Online in an interview. "Republicans need to force him to do what the established press is not doing. He says he’s got a serious proposal. Could we see it written down please?"

McConnell’s plan would require the president to submit, in detail, a list of spending cuts of equal or greater value than the amount of debt increase he is requesting (about $2.5 trillion). "Obama wants to claim to the American people that he's seriously willing to reduce spending and he’s not seriously taxing everybody and his brother," Norquist says. "He's lying. It’s time to end this fiction that he’s negotiating in good faith. They’ve got to force him to put in writing what the hell he thinks he’s doing."

He blames the "established press" for allowing the president to get away with putting out a horrendous budget earlier this year, and allowing Senate Democrats to get away with having gone more than 800 days without even passing a budget. Members of the media and their Democratic cohorts, he says, have convinced themselves that Republicans will eventually cave and agree to raise taxes, as they did in 1982 and 1990. But they are perilously mistaken. "Most the people around in ’82 and ’90 are dead now!" he exclaims. "That's a long time ago. Democrats think because MSNBC says we've got them on the ropes, that Republicans will fold and raise taxes. They’re nuts."

Exactly. I’m not certain that he is merely a Dhimmi, or is actually a crypto-moslem at this point.

McConnell: “... Democrats think because MSNBC says we’ve got them on the ropes, that Republicans will fold and raise taxes. They’re nuts.”

Weird spin, attempting to define victory down. McConnell is saying that simply approving the debt limit increase is a victory for Republicans, as long as they don’t raise taxes.

Which is obviously phony because if Republicans had wanted that, they could have quietly approved the debt limit increase months ago. No one in the world would have noticed the quick vote, like most of the debt limit increases in our history.

“Spending Cuts of equal or greater value to the amount of the rise in the debt ceiling” is and only is a raising of the debt ceiling. All the trumpeted cuts in the world will not lower the final amount that is spent. A spending cut is the subtraction of a miniscule portion of the projected statutory rise in spending of a program which “natural” increase has been inflated for public consumption in the first place. So the program is scheduled to rise in cost by 5% and the Congressmen have announced that it will have to rise by 10% and then they “cut” that figure to 8% and voila! they have enacted a 25% spending cut but the cost of the program still rises by 8%. ANY raising of the debt ceiling is a humble offering to the Democrat King in the hope that Republicans will not find themselves omitted from Democrat cocktail party guest lists.

The Republicans should reply to demands for a debt ceiling rise with a SERIOUS proposal to lower the debt ceiling.

Consider the logic of this. A rise in the debt ceiling IS an increase in spending. No quid pro quo is anything but an INCREASE IN SPENDING so long as the debt ceiling is raised. There is no overall spending cut so long as a greater amount of money is borrowed.

Trading "cuts" for a debt limit rise is feeding unicorns on the lawn.

McConnell’s an idiot. Idiot!

This gives Obama everything he wants except the tax hike. Obama will just jack up spending and the debt ceiling and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop him. There’s no way the GOP will override a veto. If... IF he proposes any cuts they’ll be unicorn cuts, figments of myth and imagination.

How stupid can the Stupid Party get? This is so darn frustrating.

Joe Six-pack doesn’t remember what he had for dinner last night, let alone budget issues or the national debt.

I can tell you one thing Obama will do with his new fat check book...a COLA increase for all seniors in 2013 (for their vote).

More in depth discussions lead me to the following:

Obama can only raise the debt ceiling to the extent it is matched by spending cuts.
The House will ensure Defense doesn’t bear an unreasonable portion of the cuts.

Norquist is a bogus Islamophile. Less credibility with me as a "Conservative" than McConnell, and that's saying something.

This is "cant" from the bought and paid for "Conservative-flavored" Washington lobbyists, going all wobbly on us. Their pissing their pants, tired of answering all those phone calls from all those industry reps in DC, worried about their checks getting interrupted.

The Debt Ceiling IS Congress' baby. Not the Usurper's. They CAN'T cede their authority to Caligula.

Get real Mitch. The guy just spent 2.5 years getting all of this spending legislation passed. He is not going to turn around and give it back. Barry is not going to cut spending. Not gonna happen.
