Male Brains Aren't Designed To Listen to Female Voices

If you've ever spent time telling a guy a story or asking him a question, only to get a blank stare in response, then you know that there's definitely truth to this claim that guys weren't designed to hear us speak. I had a similar experience at brunch this weekend when I was going on and on to a male friend about something I can't even remember anymore. When I got to the end of my rant and finally asked him if he agreed with me on the topic at hand, his answer was, "sorry, I really wasn't listening to a word you said."

Even though I was incredibly frustrated with him, he did bring up a good point, asking, "would you rather I lie and say I heard you?" This little exchange, as insignificant as it was, did make me wonder exactly what it is that makes it so easy for men to tune us out.

As it turns out, a study published in the journal NeuroImage sought to answer the very same question. Researchers found that there are major differences in the way male and female brains process voice sounds. Different brain regions are activated in men, depending on whether they're hearing a male or female voice.

Apparently, the vibration and number of sound waves in our voice makes it harder for men to decipher what we're saying. When it comes to processing a woman's voice, they use the more complex auditory part of the brain that processes music, not human voices. But the guys in the study could easily hear and understand other men’s voices as speech because that uses a simpler brain mechanism at the back of the brain.

So, next time you want to get angry and yell at a guy for "not listening," cut him a little slack – his brain just wasn't made to hear you. My suggestion would be to speak slowly and get to your point fast.

LOL. Yes, it sometimes reminds me of the “voice” on one of the car alarms systems. Get close to a vehicle or brush against it when going to my own car and this “voice” blasts out, “Step away from the vehicle. The car is armed” or some such warning. First time I heard it, it really caught me off guard. It was the first of those alarms I’d ever heard.

I don’t recall for certain either.

guessing here

Some women’s voices are easier for alerts etc. to hear . . . giving some directions in some sorts of situations.

Men’s voices can convey more solidity, priority, trustworthiness, seriousness in some situations.

Also meant to say the woman’s voice at the self-serve check out at Home Depot’s “voice” is also particularly grating. I catch myself talking back to it almost every time!!!

“Because you never shut up.”

Brutal!

But effective!

You should have done what I did (automatically, without aforethought), which was focus on her large boobs.

I liked the Clint Eastwood Model, that said, "Get away from the car, Punk!"

My frequent comment, with deep enunciation: “I don’t know what you are talking about.”

LOL! Yep, me too.

I find that if I get caught ogle-ing a scantily clad girl on TV, a safe comment is "Well, she looks cold." or "Jeez, I just don't know about THAT outfit."

That sort of cartoon is funny and all, but it completely ignores men’s historically outsized contributions to the fields of science, philosophy, art, etc. Surely Plato, Shakespeare, and Einstein had things on their minds other than sex and television.

When drug store calls with the automated female voice, I know the prescription is ready.

If the male autonomic voice comes on, I know there is something making prescription not yet filled.

I don't even have to listen to the rest of the message anymore.

Female voice....ready

Male voice.......not ready for some reason.

That’s because nothing is wrong.

I agree that Shakespeare and Plato never had TV on their mind!

Women communicate with each other by sitting and talking.

Men communicate with each other through action.

One needs to analyze and process “the other’s” thoughts.

The other only needs to process “the other’s” deeds.

That leads to

a need to be understood

vs

a need to be accepted.
