As debt-ceiling crisis grows, McConnell warns default could 'destroy' GOP (Then put it on Obama)
LA Times ^ | 7/13/2011 | James Oliphant

Posted on 07/13/2011 3:56:48 PM PDT by tobyhill

Reporting from Washington — As negotiators reconvened at the White House on Wednesday for another round of debt talks, House Republicans appeared to dig in even deeper in their resistance to any sort of deal to raise the federal debt ceiling even as one party leader foretold disaster for the GOP if its members failed to act.

Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader who has proposed a fallback plan that would likely ensure the $14.3-trillion debt limit would be raised, said in a radio interview that a default by the United States could critically damage his party heading into the 2012 elections.

A default, McConnell told talk show host Laura Ingraham, “destroys your brand.”

The Kentucky senator said the economic consequences of a default would give President Obama an opportunity to blame the GOP for the country’s economic straits. “Look, he owns the economy,” McConnell said. “He’s been in office for three years. We refuse to let him entice him into co-ownership of a bad economy.”

McConnell said that at this point the GOP had two choices: Either make a bad deal — from their perspective — with Obama or take the country into default, which, McConnell suggested would do even more damage to the party. He compared the situation to 1995, when the GOP forced a government shutdown.

“We know that’s going to happen. Just like we knew shutting down the government in 1995 was not going to work for us,” he said. “It helped Bill Clinton get reelected. I refuse to help Barack Obama get reelected.”

Across the Capitol, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) sounded his own kind of alarm, saying that a default would take the country into uncharted territory.

McCoo-coo and Boner both need to be defaulted to the unemployment lines. I’d like one person to ask obozo if he will cut off his check when he cuts off grandma’s.

The only thing a default will do is stop Obamas Acorn based spending COLD, and catch him raiding Social Security funds to pay his fascist union friends.

BRING IT!

Default is not an automatic result of not raising the debt ceiling. Obama would have to CHOOSE to default rather than cut out other spending, which would expose him to questions about his priorities. Why ruin OUR credit rating while we are sending billions abroad to the likes of Greece and Pakistan? Why ruin our economy and fund Obamacare, the NEA, and a Woodstock museum? Why spend the unspent stimulus money if you are going to harm our credit rating? There is NO downside to the Republicans staying firm on this.

I just heard that too and something about how he won’t accept a short term deal.

Give him a short term deal with equal cuts and force his hand.

It is all about the Media. This article by the LA Times.

We have said it over and over and over; the majority electorate sees (and believes) the world through the Media. It is not attentive, cognizant, nor perspicacious enough to go anywhere beyond the headlines.

And "they" know it.

If this defeatist really want to see the GOP go down in flames then just cave to Obama. It is about time the republicans stop cowering and giving in as they always do. Instead of these cry baby speeches lets hear a speech about who is really to blame here. And lets hear a speech about how close we are to the edge if we don’t stop the borrowing game.

The funny thing is that when the day comes that we fall off the cliff the republicans are going to get blamed for it by the democrats, no matter what they do. The republicans just can’t figure out how to fight back. If Reagan were here then he would show how it is done.

Oh wait... Obama has been trying to twist Reagan for his own gain as of late. And the republicans are letting him get away with it.

The republicans have Mathematical facts, and common sense on their side, and yet they act like they don’t have a clue.

Speak out Republicans! Show the left for insanity that they are.

Of course the Media will spin anything the GOP does so it's time for the GOP to go head to head against Obama and don't give in.

Just a thought.

Let’s say we default. President Obama thus has a perfect opportunity to declare a State of Emergency, and all that entails.

The political class is largely insulated from the effects of an SOE declaration. But what about everyone else?

A win/win for the political class. They emerge as the true rulers. Of course, there will be some resistance, but with the majority of Americans too dumb, or too willing to embrace a “savior” (ie, the political class) in a time of great uncertainty, I expect resistance would be minimal, sporadic, and isolated. And of course, if things get rough, remember the Bonus March (my dad always hated Douglas MacArthur for that one), when the American military opened fire on WWI veterans.

I’m going to bed......late here in Berlin. For what its worth, the GOP will fold like a cheap suit, probably in the next 7 to 10 days; that’s my political gut feeling. We shall see.

http://www.kansascity.com/2011/07/13/3012656/cantors-role-in-debt-talks-could.html

“This could blow up, and with it his ambitions,” said Larry Sabato, the director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics. And Sabato, who has known Cantor for 20 years, says Cantor is full of “pure ambition. He wants to be speaker.”

Conservatives are watching closely. “If the talks result in what’s perceived as a cave-in,” then Cantor’s political future is at risk, said Michael Franc, the vice president for government studies at the conservative Heritage Foundation

Also being said that any advances which might have been made feel thru when he walked out. He is trying so hard to be significant...not working like everything else he does when he gets his pants in a knot.

If he’s going to act like a kid instead of a leader then I don’t blame them for not areeing to anything this guy lays on the table. Besides he doesn’t care if or not what is agreed on except that which he can say came about because of him...he may be surprised what will be because of him...he’s forgetting they are where they are because he didn;t push for a balanced budget a long long time ago. Now in the final hour he wants to “shine” ...not happening thus far.

It’s worth remembering that the Senate Republicans never signed on to the Pledge To America.
