Seeking leverage against Republicans in the debt-limit standoff, President Obama on Friday declared a vast majority of Americans support his "balanced approach" to getting the nation's fiscal house in order.
"You have 80 percent of the American people who support a balanced approach. Eighty percent of the American people support an approach that includes revenues and includes cuts. So the notion that somehow the American people aren't sold is not the problem," Obama said at a White House briefing room news conference. "The problem is members of Congress are dug in ideologically into various positions because they boxed themselves in with previous statements."
But the president's numbers don't quite add up in the poll results he appears to be citing.
A Gallup poll released this week does show that only 20 percent favor the Republican approach that relies only on spending cuts. But that doesn't mean the other 80 percent favor the Democratic mix of tax increases and spending cuts.
In fact, 32 percent said they support spending cuts equally with tax increases. Another 30 percent said they prefer mostly spending cuts while 7 percent favored mostly tax increases. Just 4 percent threw their support behind tax increases alone.
Even so, it would have been fair to say at least 73 percent are open to some tax increases, and 69 percent are open to some mix of spending cuts and tax increases.
The extremes who prefer only spending cuts or only tax increases, however, are clearly in the minority.

To the Obama faithful, he doesn’t lie, but creates reality with his own pronouncements. That’s why you can’t argue with them and they will never, ever break from their Messiah. It’s both spiritual and pathological at the same time. This mentality makes people loyal to the death, and makes people walk into public places wired with explosives and nails dipped in rat poison. It’s the last stop for those who worship their emotions and become devoid of reason.
WHAT “balanced approach”?
As Speaker Boehner stated, it is like working with Jell-O - there is no “there” there.
If the titular head of the now failing obama regime cannot or will not commit any plans as to what he is willing to deal with, on paper, somewhere, then this really has been an exercise in futility.
And that cannot be good for anybody’s digestion.
All Federal employees should pay an additional 5% income tax to help with the deficit. Including congress.
Dumb frickin American populace.........
Don't send money to Washington. It only encourages them that you can afford more, even when you die.
That would be where the balance was handicapped by starting with Moose Shell on one side.
In general, the GOP should reluctantly accept a 4:1 ratio of spending cuts to tax increases, making the increases non zero.
BUT.
The spending increases front load and the tax increases back load. Simply that. They want to talk about 10 years? Fine, 2.4 trillion over 10, with 300 billion in cuts in FY 2012, 30 billion in tax increases in FY2012.
And NO BS about it. When we say cuts, we mean cubicles empty. Government workers shown the door. And the tax increases? Those real, too. Wanna close a loophole for 20 billion in revenue? Go ahead. But if the economy sinks and you don’t get your 20 billion, tough. Those cubicles stay empty.
Now that’s a deal. Just remember, everyone. The whole subterfuge is about out years. The 10 year manure is manure. They want 10 years? Fine. But the cuts front load.
“Eighty percent of the American people support an approach that includes revenues and includes cuts.”
I remember when Hillary was out there calling taxes “contributions”. It sounded less silly then “revenues” for some reason.
We could tell Obama that if you’d get out of the way of the private sector and let it grow, “revenues” would increase automagically so long as the percentage of revenue extorted from people who actually pay into that “revenue stream” remains reasonable. Then again, there would be no crisis going to waste ... these people sicken me.
Obama lies again, yet, still, always...
Unfortunately I don't believe that any of these so-called “cuts” being discussed are anything like that. These “cuts” are small decreases in the growth rate. You know, growing the budget of agency X by 5% instead of 8% is termed a “cut” in this sick national political dialog. (I would love to be proved wrong on this, but I ain't expecting it.)
He also said 80% of the people want open homosexuality in the military.
Obama is delusional and heavily, heavily medicated. The train wreck is happening right in front of us. He actually believes he is in control of events. Amazing to watch.
Hussein is evil incarnate.
Only default will cause the imbeciles that vote for socialists to stop watching reality TV and take notice.
Not that they will draw the correct conclusion, but at least the communist in chief will get whats coming to him and his comrades.
The man is getting desperate.
Actually, he is correct in a way. I’m sure that 80% of his people want higher taxes and more government handouts. Obama doesn’t have a clue what people in flyover country think or say. His worldview is New York City, Chicago, and Washington D.C. His associates are the parasites of our Country.
The GOP will never do what you say because they agree with most of the spending. A spendthrift Congress got us into this mess, why would anyone expect them to get us out?
48% of Americans pay NO FEDERAL INCOME TAXES and lot o them get MONEY BACK from US!!!!! FLAT TAX NOW!!! Everyone needs to have skin in the game!
