Salon Exclusive: The Texas governor's uncomfortably close ties to groups that glorify the Lost Cause

[UPDATED BELOW]

Rick Perry made national headlines in 2009 when, during a speech to a Tea Party group, he floated the possibility that Texas could secede from the union. But the governor's substantive ties to the neo-Confederate movement may be deeper than previously known.

A 1998 voting guide published by a leading neo-Confederate group and obtained by Salon not only endorses Perry for lieutenant governor but also describes him as "a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans." Perry's office did not respond to a request for comment about the governor's possible membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

This is the document, published by the League of the South on its website DixieNet.org; it was unearthed by Edward Sebesta, a Texas-based independent researcher and co-editor of "Neo-Confederacy: A Critical Introduction." Click the image for larger size.

[BIG BIG BIG SNIP]

UPDATE 7/14/11: Perry spokeswoman Catherine Frazier issues this denial: "[T]he governor never joined that group nor has he ever paid any dues to it."

I've asked her if he has a position on the pending license plate issue, and if I hear back I will update this post.

Kinda reminds me of the myth that the south was totally invested in the Civil War to preserve slavery...so many like to pretend that three years into the war when Lincoln was having a hard time getting recruits to fight it and soldiers were trickling home, Lincoln decided he needed a grand ideological and noble cause. So he created the great Emancipation Proclamation declaring the slaves in the South free...but wait...the five slave-holding states in the North were exempted and those slaves weren’t free men...and therefore we get the myth that the Civil War was fought to free the slaves. By the way they like to forget that the great Emancipation Declaration didn’t free anybody, because the president doesn’t have the authority to make law, only legislators can do that.

Good humor bert.

Check out one of the comments following the “Salon exclusive story”

***************

[quoting comment at Salon:] “I support the League of the South - And I’m serious. At this point in the country’s history, I find the southeastern United States to be a constant drag on the culture of the country. They lag in every development indicator; they take more federal dollars than they give (while decrying federal spending); and as a whole support and represent some of the most reprehensible views in modern society.

Yes, please take your backwater and let the rest of the country get on with building a civilized nation that doesn’t prize stupidity as anti-elitism (whatever that means).” [end quote of comment at Salon]

Well I didn’t read that closely, but if you’re saying “yay, Palin, so am I”. I’m with you on that.

So Troll,

Tell me again how I'm working for the Perry campaign or a PerryBOT?

I posted a LOT more of those pro-Palin threads when you have time to "read closely."

The Emancipation Proclamation was more of a testament to the effectiveness of Gen. Robt. E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia than anything else.

Check the genesis of the Klan. It originated with the South
as a means by a Democrat to keep the blacks from going to the Republican Party.

Many gay conservatives (fiscal at least) find a home behind the scenes as consultants. I was wondering if that was a possible source of the rumors, that friendship.

Rove did quite a few "conversions" ~ I really don't hold any of his conversos responsible for Rove's involvement.

On the other hand, if you ever got elected as a Democrat to public office YOU CAN NEVER BE A REAL REPUBLICAN.

And that applies no matter how Conservative you claim to be today.

They have their litmus tests ~ just like the Made Men of the Mafia. You want to run for office as a Democrat you have to lie about and brutalize a Republican candidate at least once.

In an earlier time they actually assassinated Republican candidates in the Souf' ~ 30,000 of them in fact.

These are unforgivable deaths, and those who dipped their spears in the blood, albeit 20 or 30 years later, must not be allowed anymore to darken our halls.

NO MORE RINOS.

Oh blah, blah, blah, Perry’s a Bilderberger, Palin’s a Bilderberger, all conservatives are racist white supremecists who want to kill off grandma and grandpa throwing them over the cliff in a wheelchair. Perry and Palin are both insane Christians. Palin is for Unions, Perry promotes Amnesty, Perry’s in fact a democrat even though he’s been pushing conservative issues even when he WAS in fact a democrat, Romney leads in all the polls, Ron Paul is a crazy nutjob...and on and on and on...we’re going to hear every lie imaginable during this election cycle, and we’re ALL going to have to be on tap to dispute them, just like in this article.

The POINT of this article was to point out the insanity of the liberal babble-heads in the media. They are crackhead adolescents who will promote any lie and twist and distort WORDS for the benefit of the commiecrats, while trying to ignore the fact that the democratic party no longer exists in our government because the CPUSA hijacked it.

And you’d better get used to the fact that if I want to put up an article disputing lies about my Governor, I will do it. And so should anybody else that finds one.

Why are we discussing a SALON story. They are always an untrustworthy source.

To point out the fact that they’re an untrustworthy source and dispute their lies...in the hope that somebody might read it and keep themselves informed.

Having trouble following you.

But Perry did attend Bilderberg in 2007. And that’s not disputed. Some people think that’s very very bad. Some people watch the attendence list to see who the global elites, the really bad guys, are going to push. Last time around it was Chuck Hegel. He was in the early polls, before the race really started, and no one was taking.

I’ve been a member of the SCV for over thirty years. Its less racist than is the NAACP and Black legislative caucuses. The pride that Southerners and those that are connected to it causes the liberals to go into jealous rages. They cannot control us unless they destroy our unique heritage.
