A Polish writer, named Tadeusz Dolega Mostowicz saw it first in the 1930s, in a novel titled Kariera Nikodema Dyzmy, which Jerzy Kosinski plagiarized, according to some, but certainly was influenced by. The hero Nikodem Dyzma (after 'dismal', I presume) was the model for Chauncey Gardiner.
