HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Hispanics nationally are stepping up their criticism, but U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks won't apologize for saying he would "do anything short of shooting them" to keep illegal immigrants out of America.
"I'm not going to back off because these folks want to resort to name-calling," Brooks said Monday. Brooks spoke after a week in which he was criticized by the head of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and two groups of Hispanic Republicans.
U.S. Rep. Charles Gonzalez, D-Tex., urged Brooks' Republican colleagues last Wednesday to repudiate his comments. Those comments include Brooks comparing illegal immigrants to house-breakers as he defended Alabama's tough new immigration law.
At a town meeting in June, Brooks said he supports any measure "short of shooting them" that would force illegal immigrants back to their home countries.
"Rhetoric referencing acts of violence has no place in the discussion for realistic solutions to our country's immigration problems," Gonzalez said. "Words have consequences, and Congressman Brooks chose irresponsible words that reflect a hateful, dehumanizing undercurrent in the discussion on immigration."
The Republican group "Somos Republicans!" said on its website that Brooks "should apologize for his remarks, stop bashing immigrants, and instead work with his colleagues on a complete overhaul of our broken immigration system."
Another group, Arizona Hispanic Republicans, said Brooks "is no Christian Compassionate."
Brooks dismissed his critics as supporters of complete amnesty for illegals and said their comments are "traditional politics."
"I was speaking in hyperbole in order to emphasize a point," Brooks said of his "anything short of shooting them" remark.
He noted that the next sentence in his oft-quoted comment was, "Anything that is lawful, it needs to be done because illegal aliens need to quit taking jobs from American citizens."
"Anything that is lawful," Brooks emphasized Monday.
Brooks brushed aside questions about whether his remarks are a distraction in the immigration debate or cast Alabama in a negative light.
"They don't like Alabama or Alabama's immigration law," he said of his critics.
Brooks said his stand is popular across the country. He's been on media outlets in various places, he said, and was told last week by a Texas politician that he could easily win office in Houston.
Brooks and controversy are becoming linked. His Wikipedia page now has a "controversies" section. It details the "anything short of shooting them" controversy and the April flap that followed him calling some House members "socialists" on the House floor. Brooks withdrew that remark from the record after being criticized..
When are the rest of our “leaders” going to get the message:
WE DON’T WANT THEM HERE . . . PERIOD.
No apologies! He’s absolutely right!
b
The only thing that is broken in the immigration system is the fact it isn’t enforced.
Build a wall, deport all the criminals and with whoever is left, offer the opportunity to touch up providing their employer will sponsor them. Anyone who is receiving benefits, has to go back and apply. No touch up applies to them. They have to get in line.
WTF? Congressional Hispanic Caucus? Congressional Black Caucus? Do we have a Congressional White Caucus? I thought not...
We need a Congressional AMERICAN Caucus rather than all this division into special interest teams!
I’m okay with shooting illegal immigrants. Mexico does it on their southern border and if they can do it to Guatamalans, Hondurans, and etc. then they should not whine when we do it to Mexican criminals who try to breach our borders.
Texas, don't mess with Alabama.
Lets be honest.
Congressional Hispanic Caucus, simply means screw all white people, we're taking what you got and taking over the entire country, because our people reproduce like ants, even if they can't afford to feed their kids...We'll totally out number you in less than 1 generation...
Roll Tide, and Yea, Alabama.
End family reunification.
Anyone deported loses all rights to ever become a citizen.
End dual citizeenship.
Impeach Obama. Ok, I just threw that las one in there.
Good for him for not apologizing.
Lets just send the rest of them back to California, and give Cali back to Mexico (them and the libs have already ruined the state anyway), then build a wall and whoever crosses it becomes a terrorist.
It would solve a couple of problems, the illegals, the MeCHa and La Raza groups, the libs, the ridiculous advantage CA has in the electoral college, their bankruptcy.
BTW, I was born and reared in CA and escaped a few years ago and moved back to America.
Agreed. My father and stepfather risked their lives coming here (legally) from Eastern Europe. My father escaped to Paris then got his paperwork for a visa. My stepfather spent 18 months in a refugee camp working 18 hours a day for a bowl of pasta (he never would eat spaghetti after that) for a CHANCE to come to America.
When I was growing up, we sponsored several of his relatives to come over and become citizens.
They all learned English, became Americans, flew American flags and worked hard and never took a dime of welfare.
These illegals are spitting on the sacrifices my family made and I’m sick of it.
When Sonny Bono was running for Senate in 1992, he was asked by a local news reporter (Palm Springs) what his views about ‘illegal aliens’ were.
His response was “What views? They are not legal.”
How is it controversial to use force to stop an invasion sanctioned by another nation? The Mexican problem is no different than an invasion fleet landing on our shores. Invaders, loot, steel, kill. I can’t see much difference between an invading army and the criminal aliens.
Get these useless People OUT OF HERE,they are from failed Societies,By their own hand,Not a good resume!!
This congressman must learn the truth: the word “hyperbole” is beyond the vocabulary of the American people.
