Academic Paper Says Edible Meat Can be Grown in a Lab on Industrial Scale

Experiments for NASA space missions have shown that small amounts of edible meat can be created in a lab. But the technology that could grow chicken nuggets without the chicken, on a large scale, may not be just a science fiction fantasy.

In a recent paper in the Tissue Engineering journal, a team of scientists has proposed two new techniques of tissue engineering that may one day lead to affordable production of in vitro - lab grown - meat for human consumption. It is the first peer-reviewed discussion of the prospects for industrial production of cultured meat.

Nope - they tanned his hide when he died, Clyde, and that’s it hanging on the shed.

I thought the Chicoms were already doing this, and exporting it to us as real food?

For some reason this reminds me of the old song “In The Year 2525”. That song just popped into my mind when I read the article. LOL!

Now, if they can “grow up” a 10 lb Eye of the Round roast, I would be tempted to try it! Can they wrap it in bacon?

H. Beam Piper used to call this “carniculture” in his novels. It's a good idea.

Test tube frankfurters.

Ah ha! So that’s why hotdogs are smooth and round.

Anybody know where I can buy hotdog seeds? I’ll just grow my own.

Piper had a lot of excellent visions - I liked his vision of an unbeatable lie detector used in the courtroom - imagine what a difference that would make. The Casey Anthony trial would have taken 10 minutes.

You may be sure it’ll be a government grant drain in perpetuity, research that goes on as far as the eye can see into the future.

Presumably the same process could genetically engineer in all the omega 3 and other goodies one wants and get rid of the cholesterol and undesirable stuff. Sounds worthwhile to me.

Yea, except all that 'undesirable' stuff usually turns out to be good for you a few years down the road. We don't understand our body chemistry well enough to say that certain substances aren't needed for proper function.
Also, think of the taste! Why would you kill that?

Why not just raise Chickens in space?

We already know the Pigs in Space program was very successful.

If meat is murder, are we growing murder in a lab now?

Naw, this meat will have never had a face.

This is meat PETA could get behind!
