Obama slapped with £120 London congestion charge fine

PRESIDENT Barack Obama was fined £120 ($193) for not paying the London congestion charge during his state visit to Britain, The Sun reported today.

The President was hit with the penalty for his motorcade.

London mayor Boris Johnson wanted the £10 ($15) congestion fee to be paid for the President's armor-plated limo - dubbed "The Beast" - and all other cars during his visit in May.

But cameras only managed to photograph one of the vehicles in Obama's motorcade because they were driving so close together. That is the subject of the $193 fine.

To forestall the inevitable comments - diplomatic immunity does not extend to traffic charges. It does extend to the fine - so the Obama motorcade was legally obliged to pay the congestion charge. But cannot actually be forced to pay any penalty for doing so.

Since he’s using taxpayer’s equipment and vehicles, and using the taxpayer’s dollar to pay this penalty...

Can we take his keys away?

... the President's armor-plated limo - dubbed "The Beast" ...

... which coincidentally is exactly what millions of Americans have dubbed the First Lady.

He can pay this one out of his own pocket. Whoops, what am I saying? He’s never paid his own bills in his life.

Throw him in jail if he doesn’t pay it. That would solve a lot of problems.

Perhaps they could revoke his Kenyan citizenship.

If they were to throw him in jail,he would have a lot of
company—from the article:

“Foreign embassy staff owe more than $75 million in unpaid congestion charge fines - plus $737,000 in parking fines.

The US is at the top of the list with a $7.5 million bill, followed by Russia on $6.6 million.”

$75 million in congestion fees?-

Seeing as how 0bama is also a British subject via 0 Sr’s citizenship, I wonder if the Brits will try to extradite him, or toss him in the can next time he’s in their territory.

Since when does diplomatic immunity not extend to traffic charges?

Talk to any cop in NY or D.C. and they’ll tell you about the thousands of scofflaws with diplomatic immunity who just go on breaking traffic laws every day.

When you get on that Beltway you had better pray that the guy behind you is not a foreign diplomat driving without any insurance.

It never has. Diplomats (or their country) have to pay legitimate local charges, for things like train tickets, airline tickets, and traffic charges including tolls, parking fees etc. Diplomatic immunity does not extend to these things.

Yes, and the point is, they are, as you put it 'scofflaws'. Diplomatic Immunity does mean that they cannot be forced to pay a fine for breaking these laws and so they ignore them. That doesn't mean they are not supposed to follow them, any more than the fact that you can't prosecute him would give the New Zealand Ambassador the right to commit armed robberies. There's a difference between not being able to prosecute a diplomat and the idea that what they did was not illegal.

They are supposed to follow traffic laws as they are supposed to follow all laws. They can't just can't be prosecuted if they do not. And, yes, in some cases, that means they ignore them.

I've done my time attached to an embassy with a diplomatic passport, and CD plates on the car. I had to know the rules - and my superiors did expect me to follow them unless I had a very good reason directly related to my diplomatic function not to. Not all countries set that standard. And, yes, cops in New York have reason to complain - the diplomats at the UN are among the worst offenders.
