Most Orland firefighters made more than $100,000 in 2010 Overtime added nearly $2 million to $21 million payroll

By Andy Grimm and Steve Schmadeke, Tribune reporters

July 20, 2011

The leaders of the Orland Fire Protection District say they're the best fire department in the state. At a minimum, they are probably among the best-paid, figures released Tuesday show.

Of the 108 firefighters, lieutenants and engineers on the southwest suburban department's payroll last year, 79 were paid more than $100,000, according to salary data provided by new fire district board President James Hickey.

Those paychecks were pumped up by overtime that added nearly $2 million to a $21 million payroll that Hickey said was among the largest for any fire protection district in Illinois.

Total compensation — pay, benefits and pension contributions — for 25 department employees exceeded $200,000, led by Chief Bryant Krizik's $260,000 package. Not far behind him was an engineer whose $237,000 combined compensation included $87,000 in base salary and $59,695 in overtime.

What's the big deal?

Illinois is efficient enough and since they are running a surplus on one of the lowest tax rates in the country, they deserve to toss a bit of their cash around their cities without concern from tax payers. /s

This is far from an unusual, outlier incident.

Check out your own Taxpayer FireParties in your own municipalities folks.

Base salaries are but the tip of a very nasty iceberg.

This is what happens when you throw a monkey wrench into the laws of supply and demand. Everyone and his brother wants to be a fireman - the line stretches to the horizon.

The neighboring village has a volunteer fire department.

Non Profit Organization: Tinley Park Volunteer Fire Department, Tinley Park, Illinois

Our Mission Statement:

"The primary mission of the Tinley Park Fire Department is the protection of life, property and the environment by the delivery of effective and efficient fire protection and prevention." -Chief Kenneth Dunn

"We Serve Others, Not Ourselves"

Please stop by and see the memorial statue located at 173rd Place and Oak Park Avenue. Included on the base of this statue are the names of the dedicated firefighters that have carried on this 100-year tradition.

Good memories of Tinley Park. Back in 2003 we stayed a few days at a campsite about a mile from the commuter station. We decided to walk both ways while we visited Chicago. One day on the way back, some guy parked by a small business offered us a ride and at first I said no (wife with me). Then I saw his wife by the car and he explained he was a police officer there and routinely gave visitors a lift to the campsite.

A nice touch.
