Unfortunately that's not the whole story. Texas pushes alot of things back onto cites and counties that most state governments consider their responsibility. TX is #2 in the country in local debt per-cap, right behind NY.

Texas is doing fine as best I can tell. I still get the $8,400 figure when I cleared my cache and not the number you have. Sorry but that’s the way it is.

And these are bad stats. Texas has at least $37B in state-held outstanding debt (not counting city/local).
