Reid: We Must Raise Taxes! (Barry dumps Dems on taxes?)
Nationa Review ^ | 07/21/11 | Andrew Stiles

Posted on 07/21/2011 12:45:50 PM PDT by TonyInOhio

Senate Democrats just wrapped up a meeting with OMB Director Jack Lew in the Capitol and they are not pleased. All indications are that the reports Dan cites are more or less accurate. Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) told reporters that a call came in from the White House during the meeting to announce a “potential agreement” with House Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio).

Reid appeared to confirm reports that the proposed deal would not raise significant revenue, at least in the near term, and indicated that he didn’t think this would be acceptable to Democrats in congress. “The president always talked about balance, there had to be some fairness in this,” he said, grimly. “This can’t be all cuts. There has to be balance, there has to revenue and cuts.”

So, provided the reports are generally true, is Obama really willing to sell all Congressional Democrats down the river (apart from the moderates facing reelection in 2012) just to win another term? I think the answer is self-evident.

Reid: "... There has to be balance, there has to revenue and cuts.”

Washington math?

If you cut and raise taxes, what is the point? That keeps things as their are, while just shifting the money around.

It does nothing to help resolve the situation.

Obama already got his tax increases with Obamacare. He just wants a deal.

In case no one noticed, barry met with the dims this morning. I would be willing to bet the orders from barry were something like:

We are going to announce that we are close to deal this afternoon and no matter how great you think it is: cry, whine, rend your garments and flagellate yourselves in public over the unfair deal that I am about to convince the stupid republicans to sign-off on.

"What happens on FR if President Obama folds and Boehner and the GOP stand firm?"

"Gigantic surprise, for one thing."

Ok, I lol'd.

Could be a head fake but on the other hand Nobama assumes the Dems lose the Senate next year regardless of what happens, the House is probably a lost cause as well but I might as well save my a$$.

You can’t entirely blame Nevadans. You have to remember these people cheat and cheat and cheat and then cheat some more. Las Vegas is one of the most devastated cities in the country. You think they wanted more o’ what ol’ dingy harry’s been dishing out?

BLUF:

Established Democrats, like Harry Reid, must raise taxes. In doing so they radically increase their chances of getting campaign “donations” to write exemptions from the new tax codes.

Congress Critter discovered a long time ago that they could get loads of campaign money by offering a quid pr quo by writing specialized exemptions to various taxes and inserting them, often unread, into other legislation.

Proof of statement:

Look at the number of waivers granted to various groups, individuals, businesses in ObamaCare. Does anyone outside the belt way think that these waivers were written out of the goodness of some Democratic Bureaucrat?

No new taxes means no new sources of Campaign cash for the Congress Critters, both Democrat and Republican.

I wonder:

a) how much personal pressure can he bring to bear on skittish republicans? and
b) Can he even mount a pressure game any more without Rahmbo to be in charge of sending out the dead fishes?

These F’king people remind me of the rat that’s taught to push a bar and get a treat. You can stop feeding them the treat and they’ll keep pushing that bar for a long time.

This time it's not so much pressure to bear on Repubs as it is how much he has to give them in order to pass the bill.

This time it looks to me like he's under the pressure.

“Fact of the matter is that Hussein needs the majority in the House more than he needs the Senate Dems.
He has to win the conservative Repubs...even then he can still get a handful of Dems in the Senate needed to pass this legislation.”

—If that’s truly the case, then there should be no reason why pressure shouldn’t be put on the “moderate” Senate Dems to accept bigger, *real* discretionary cuts, etc. under any deal (just keep pushing the envelope bit-by-bit to see how much they’ll bend). Shifting baselines around, using long-term estimates, etc. to get to a $3. 7 T number without substantial, real cuts, OTOH, is going to be a hard sell for House Conservatives.

And the last thing anybody wants is for Obama to get away with looking “bipartisan” here if the “cuts” are basically bogus, and long-term, and don’t truly address the debt problem.

(This is mostly about the Gang of Six, and the McConnell Plan, but the idea still holds):

Oh HAil to the yes. It’s about time to take a good hard look at doing that because the guvmnt need to rais money to pay da mack daddy da juice and pawt of da nut.

Also, Congressman Ted Poe was saying this morning that he’s introduced some legislation to force the feds to sell of some of the federal land holdings to raise funds. Why the hell do you think they are selling off the petroleum reserves? They don’t give a fig about your gas prices, they want them to go up. They just want to sell off those reserves while they can get a decent price for them for the cash money.

(just keep pushing the envelope bit-by-bit to see how much they’ll bend).

I think that's been going on all along.

Dems said we MUST have tax hikes...well that may not be happening.

Dems said we would have LESS in cuts than the debt limit...well that doesn't look like it's happening (in fact, we may be getting MORE cuts than the debt limit now).

Dems said Medicare was off the table (well, looks like Medicare cuts are now to be discussed).

I think if real cuts, no tax hikes and Medicare reform are all in the deal we have come quite a long way already in pushing the envelope...

“I think if real cuts, no tax hikes and Medicare reform are all in the deal we have come quite a long way already in pushing the envelope...”

Devil’s in the details, of course- but yeah, that would certainly be a lot better than the other plans floating around (besides CCB).

(And I think the goal should be to make the Medicare reform as serious as can be if Obama’s ready to budge to get a deal. Two birds, one stone...)

Yes Reid, because your Government is incapable of cutting its budget like the American people. we must ask the American people to cut back on even more of their budget to make up for your unwillingness to do the same.

Yes we know Reid its all about you the Government, we the people are just pawns who exist for no other propose then to slavishly pay your taxes and obey your orders.

Republicans need to just let the Government shut down so that the world can see that we don’t need to default and the world DOES NOT END when the Federal government actually starts running on revenue.

This is a crisis for the big spending big goverment Democrats Not a crisis for small goverment small spending republicans. For us this is a tremendous opportunity. The fact that The most criminally corrupt and dishonest administration in history has been trying to scare everyone into thinking its the end of the world just means we have to prove them wrong by passing that dead line with a whimper.

Let the American people learn just how unimportant most of what the Federal Government does. Or if Obama should choose to de-fund critical functions Let them learn about Obama’s poor judgement.
