"A lot of the spending cuts that we're making should be around areas like defense spending as opposed to food stamps," President Obama told in an interview with NPR.

More like - “we don’t need the armed guards at the door of the bank anymore because we haven’t ever been robbed”.

Defense, SS, Medicare/Caid will have to be cut severely in order for the Republic to survive. No other programs/entitlements come close to spending as much as those three. Both repubs and dems know this.

Just wish Obama wasnt the one to do it.

What does our current policy of world policing have to do with “common defense?” Here’s a weird concept for you: let’s bring home the troops AND defund NPR.

Well said...except Obama won’t be the won to do it. By throwing out false dichotomies of “food stamps” versus “defense” he is jerking the chains of both his base and conservatives. Our proper answer should be, as you say, sure, Mr. President, let’s cut both the welfare and warfare state. THAT would force him on the defensive for once.

Fine. Cut defense. Tell me stories about parking lots. Tell me horror stories about weapons programs. Fine. Cut it.

Trivial stuff. The main factor which is feeding our bloated and unsustainable Pentagon (a more word than "defense") budget is our effort to police the world. That costs a trillion per year! Let's close down the bases we now have in 120 countries and we can save some real money. If we combine that with cuts in entitlements we can easily balance the budget in a single year.

Don’t you know that Moosechelle is going to solve that problem by shaming and forcing grocery stores to open new stores in those dreaded food desert areas that her entitlement class peeps have created. They will now have grocery stores within walking distance that they can go to to do their shoplifting instead of having to take a bus to do it. So even if they do pack a brown bag lunch we will be paying for it anyway in the form of higher prices at our grocery stores.

The women breed like rabbits to get that monthly check...they've made an occupation out of birthin’ babies and cashing checks for their “labor.”

What low lives these people are....mentally and morally bereft, and they like it that way. They are a useless drain on society. They are used by politicians, the revruns in their churches, and as long as they can live off being used, dat ok.

Responsible black people in this society, do something about this cancer in your communities. Take it back to a time when women and men courted in preparation for choosing a partner for MARRIAGE, a time when you SHAMED a man or woman who had a baby out of wedlock, a time when you VALUED education and the WORK ETHIC, and made sure your child attended school and made good grades, a time when you DISCIPLINED your child and allowed no back talk, no bad behavior, when you taught your children respect for elders, each other and the laws of civil society, a time when you took your children to church on Sunday, taught them the Ten Commandments, and how they applied to their daily living.

Responsible black people, you have work to do, and God help us all if you fail.

“Since taking office Obama has added an additional 12 million people to the Food Stamp program, an increase of 28% for a record total of 44 million.”

How very true. In addition, folks already on Food Stamps have had their taxpayer-paid government handout increased a lot.

As a triage interviewer for a local food bank. I have seen a tremendous increase in the amount of Food Stamps people get. Typical example: household with three family members (mom and two kids), two years ago: $156/month. Today (no change in household): $309/month.

Gotta keep the government slaves satisfied so they will continue to vote for socialists.

Plus there’s a lot of fraud with Food Stamps. I’ve heard of Food Stamp recipients buying steaks at the grocery store and selling the steaks to their neighbors.

Yo! 'Bama! WE HAVE LOST THE WAR ON POVERTY! Trillions of dollars, the longest war in our nation's history, and the enemy is flourishing! It's time to withdraw! It's a quagmire!!!

With the other three, we still have a chance.

Not to be a devil's advocate, but have you seen grocery prices lately? That's more of an inflation correction than a raise.

No argumnt there, and I have heard of the same. That's because they can't just sell the paper slips for 50 cents on the dollar down at the bar like they used to (now there's the card....)

I've not had a COLA on my Social Security in two years because "there's no inflation." Yet these grifters get an almost 100% increase in Food Stamps (~50% per year) you and I are paying for? Sorry that does not compute.

I recently interviewed a family of six (Mom and five kids, oldest kid is 16) who are getting $1,100/month in Food Stamps. That's almost $200/month per family member in Food Stamps. THIS STINKS!

Don't forget to add in subsidized housing, medicaid, and all the other amenities, too.

That's because (iirc), the 'inflation' standard used by the SSA is the CPI which 'leaves out the volatile food and energy sectors'. IOW, the measure of inflation used does not count the two things most likely to jump in price, and which you need to survive.

But then, consider the liberal mantra/battle cry, the food stamps are "for the chilrennnn", and people who have already paid their way are supposed to march off quietly to the showers...

I'm a great-grandpa, albeit a fairly young one, and I expect to work till I die. Social Security is a few years away for me, if there is any there when/if I get to that age, and I see the program as the most incredible theft, ongoing, Ponzi-scheme style in our nation's history. Of course, by the time the current Administration is over, that may change.

Amen. Couldn’t have said it better. Dems have always hated the Military for as long as I’ve been alive..and that is 63 years. But all we are hearing are cuts, no specifics, just cuts, and cuts with no reform are useless. Every program has donor palm greasing built in to them.

0 wants to cut 3,000 CPO to do them out of their retirement, he says we have to many CPO’s, but nothing is said about cutting his country club, golfing buddy Admirals, who already have their retirement in.

TN alone gets half a mil a year to put wild flowers along the highways..via the Lady Bird Johnson highway beautification program. They may be pretty, but they are NOT essential to the running of government. This is one program that could be totally eliminated. One of 12 dozen or more useless programs many FReepers are aware of. Nor are these median plant thingys, that cause more havoc because they were poorly planned. And we have to pay the water bill on top of it.

They are not interested in cutting their pet useless projects.

“After all, defense spending is constitutional, while food stamps are not. Which should I cut? Well, I don’t like that constitution thing, it gets in my way.”
