Hyatt apologizes for heat lamps being turned on strikers

Hyatt apologized Friday morning for an incident in which heat lamps were turned on above workers on strike at the Park Hyatt Chicago hotel Thursday, saying a manager is responsible for the controversial move.

Hotel workers on strike were taken by surprise Thursday morning when 10 heat lamps hanging above their picket line flipped on and stayed on for what they claim was nearly an hour.

They should have used dogs... fire hoses and tear gas.

No joke. Assault is assault.

Turning a heat lamp on is not assault. In the winter it would have been requested.

People swim in water and drink it, too, but I don’t think strikers should be sprayed from hoses.

OK then, toasted, cooked, reheated, whatever.

I just serviced a series of TEC ovens a couple of weeks ago, that they ran until I arrived. After an hour of cool-down, they were still 150F and the print shop itself was probably 120F. But even exiting the oven, it felt like I was in a cool balmy atmosphere.

That was one of those days where I got home and my blue shirt and pants were white from the salt in my sweat.

It was so bad...so brutal...

That they stayed there for "nearly an hour".

I'm guessing it would be as hot as me going outside of my house right now. (91 degrees at 10 AM)

So therefore someone who goes to a tanning booth is getting assaulted.

An annoying dirty trick, not assault. I would have just moved temporarily until the situation was resolved. But then that would be using common sense which many unions and union workers don't have these days.

No, I think that would be voluntary. Dumb, but voluntary.

“but I don’t think strikers should be sprayed from hoses.”

Are they tiny strikers? munchkins? How do they get them in the hose?

Not enough facts. What kind of “heat lamps” are these and why are they there at all? Was the protest occurring on a public sidewalk or Hyatt’s property? How much difficulty would it be to simply move to a different spot?

Hyatt should buy them cases of cases of cold beer, coolers to sit on, patio umbrellas. Portable AC units should be mandatory for strikers, paid for by Hyatt of course. Massage therapists, psychological counseling...

I used to be a paint room foreman. During the summer it wasn’t unusual to look at the thermometer on a support beam in the center of the main floor and see readings of 130 degrees or more.

We used to push racks of parts into a gas fired “walk in” batch oven that I kept at 180 degrees. I had a 5 man crew that worked in near steady 150 degree heat just a few feet away from an infra red line oven.

I rotated everyone every two hours but only one of the jobs took them out of the heat for two hours. I the evil foreman on the other hand, spent my entire day in the heat and often skipped breaks because things needed to get done.

America, the T ball nation.

Better yet, Hyatt should be forced to pay "undocumented immigrants" to protest by proxy for these poor, assaulted union workers.

Meanwhile, Hyatt should be required to put these poor, abused union workers in suites, with an open bar for all, at the expense of the hotel!

And if there is even one "person of color" in the group, a discrimination suit should be filed against Hyatt, for clearly racist heat lamp assault!
