Two Super Bowl Sundays ago, Elliot Mayfield, his 15 and 11 year old daughters and a friend were waiting at a South Side Chicago bus stop.
A very intoxicated Samuel Fullilove approached the group and offered to sell drugs to Mayfield. Although Mayfield had a 1990 drug conviction, he was now a drug rehab counselor and informed Fullilove that he was just trying to get his daughters home safely.
Undeterred, Fullilove continued to press Mayfield, yelling, taunting him and according to the police report, eventually getting into one of his daughters faces.
At this point, an angry Mayfield, removed a pistol from his pocket and showed it to Fullilove. Ill use it, he told the overly aggressive drug dealer.
Fullilove walked away but returned seconds later, took a swing at Matfield and began to chase him. Chicago surveillance cameras showed the entire incident.
Then, moments after one of Mayfields daughters tried to get between the men, Mayfield retrieved the pistol, pointed it at Fullilove and fired one round.
In a panic, Mayfield bundled his daughters into a car owned by the friend he had been talking to and drove home. That evening, he called police, identified himself and upon their arrival, gave them the .25 automatic he used in the shooting.
Charged by prosecutors with first AND second degree murder and jailed on February 7th, 2010 in lieu of $500,000 bond, Mayfield finally had his day in court on July 15th 18 months after the shooting.
Cook County Judge Maura Slattery Boyle acquitted Mayfield of both charges and set him free, saying that Mayfield, wasnt a murderer. He was just trying to protect his family.
Now for the really interesting part of the story
unless, of course, youre Mr. Mayfield or a member of his family

Really? an automatic?
Must be one of those new burst-fire pocket pistols. /sarc
Not exactly a new thing, I’ve heard semi-autos referred to as autos ever since I was a kid and I’m 66 years old now. Not by just the media either. Yes, it’s inaccurate but common.
Just short for automatic centerfire pistol, ACP.
I think referring to semi-autos as “automatics” is an older convention that originated when semi-autos first came on the scene, to distinguish them from the then-ubiquitous revolvers. It continues today I think among the press because, as liberals, they don’t know anything about firearms and don’t realize they’re using anachronistic verbage.
Killed the guy with one shot with a .25?
That’s awesome.
I think he exhibited excellent shot placement while under a lot of stress.
Large American cities are slowly becoming like third world countries - Somalia comes to mind.
“Killed the guy with one shot with a .25?”
Head shot? Heart shot? Gonna go finish the article to see if it says.
“Automatic” was the vernacular of the day when such pistols were invented. The term “semi-automatic” came into use when fully-automatic weapons became more common.
“.45 Auto” is standard noir terminology.
Ditto for .32 and .25 “automatics”.
It was a regular street sweeper, it was.
Correct. ACP = Automatic Colt Pistol.
Turned himself in?
Why?
If you can take out the trash and walk away, do it!
There is no merit in sticking around to answer a bunch of dumb questions.
I’ve referred to “semi-autos” as automatics for decades...like most other people my age. The advent of the leftist era of 2nd amendment attacks has made the semi auto description necessary, almost as self defense from left wing misrepresentation!
The older brother of a friend of mine growing up use to carry a little .25 automatic with him when he had to work in downtown Detroit. Being a young know-it-all kid I just scoffed at him and said "You aren't going to kill anyone with that little thing." To which he replied "It's not meant to kill them with, but it sure gives me a hell of an advantage in the fist fight that follows."
