WICHITA, Kan. Wichita police say a woman is recovering after being injured in a strange shooting.

Police say the 19-year-old was shot in the chest Monday when her boyfriend began taking off his shorts as they walked along a city street.

Lt. Randy Reynolds say a gun the 18-year-old boyfriend was carrying in waistband fell to the ground and fired, hitting the woman.

Reynolds says the Wichita man first told police a car had driven by and fired shots at the couple, but later changed his story.

The man was arrested. Police did not say why he was taking off his shorts on a city street.

Yep, if you start stripping down, you have to be careful about your gun in your waistband. Gee I hate it when the gun goes off like that.

a properly holstered weapon is a safe weapon.

I’m sure she would have been more than happy to hold his weapon while he dropped ‘em.

Note to self: don’t carry weapon in waistband with round in chamber.

Check.

He probably had it tucked into his pants homie style, instead of using a holster. Also, only the cheapo guns fire when dropped. Good guns, even simple revolvers, have internal safety devices to prevent this happening.

I think the man needs to change his story yet again. I can't think of too many handguns that fail the 3 foot drop check. Maybe, just maybe a 1911 that is cocked but not locked could strike the ground just right so it breaks off the hammer's sear, but that's about it.

Even a cocked revolver usually requires the trigger to be fully depressed in order for the hammer to strike the primer. And one doesn't normally carry a cocked revolver in one's waistband.

Ahhh..........cheapo guns.

Many years ago, on a whim, I bought a Raven .25; of course, I never carried in my waistband. Never carried it all, it just sat in my desk drawer.

I always figured if push came to shove, I could throw it at someone.

This is such a good reminder to check the safety before I drop trou and get buck nekkid on a city street. It just bad etiquitte to have your gun going off like that, people will stare.

You never know, that Raven might have been good for one shot (the one up the pipe), and rarely a second, but with a .25, if you have a good arm and aim, you might do more damage...
