As many as 30 people are feared dead in a shooting at a Norwegian youth camp after a bomb in the capital Oslo killed at least seven.
Shots were fired by a man dressed as a police officer at a youth meeting of the ruling Labour Party in Utoya - an island on the outskirts near the capital.
An eyewitness reported seeing between 25 and 30 bodies.
Norwegian police said they thought there could also be explosives on the island.
Around 600 people were believed to be taking part in the summer camp - most of whom were teenagers aged between 14 and 18.
Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg had been due to attend the event.
One man was arrested after the incident - he was described as tall and blonde, and spoke fluent Norwegian.
Sky sources said he was shot and wounded during the arrest.
Police said they suspected he was linked to the bombing in Oslo.
Emilie Bersaas, 19, was on the island when the shooting started and said that people started running and screaming when they heard the gunfire.
"People are very shaken up as we do not know who is ok and who is not," she said.
"There are a lot of people I do not know anything about.
"It was terrifying - at one point, the shooting was very close to me and hit the building I was in.
"The people in the next room screamed loudly."

Hate to bring it up, but what’s to stop a gunman walking into almost any school in America? Time it for an assembly and have enough guys to cover the exits and you could do a whole Beslan right here.

ABC radio news just gleefully reported that he was a “domestic extremist” — a resident who spoke fluent Norwegian.
It is NOT the actions of brave warriors, both armed and armored, confronting a threat.
Spread out and take cover as you move towards the gunfire = proper response.
Cowering behind a van = wrong.
I am reminded of the brave brave SWAT teams at Virginia Tech and at Columbine - selflessly pissing themselves and cowering while some students stood in the open filming with cell phones - and other students were being murdered.

You may be thinking of Switzerland, where all able bodied male citizens are considered to be members of the Reserves. They are required to have their infantry weapon home, and ready to be called up at a moments notice.

While I am not a big fan of ABC radio, I have some experience with broadcast news. No one, and I mean no one, with any talent or experience is working in radio on a hot afternoon in the summer.
You might just as well be listening to college radio.

Great question. What stops this is patriots electing a constitional sheriff in their county, who believes in the 2nd amendment.
A constitutional sheriff can:
1) Establish ground rules on which other law enforcement may enter the county and under what circumstances.
2) Buy surplus military equipment.
3) Keep out, through roadblocks and armed squads, federal thugs and cops trying to enter the county through a declared “emergency.”
3) Train a 2,000 man volunteer deputy auxiliary battalion for “emergencies.” (This is how you protect schools and do other jobs the crominal fascists in DC refuse to do, such as arresting illegals who are, by definition, criminals.)
I have a constutional sheriff in my county. He works really well. FReepers need to elect one in their counties. It makes life very secure and peaceful.
The federal courts have ruled that sheriffs are sovereign, and are not subject to commands, edicts and dictates from the criminal fascist syndicate occupying Washington.

But you know as well as I, that if you have bad news to release, yesterday afternoon was the time to do it.

Interesting political ideas, but pretty much irrelevant to preventing a Beslan or Mumbai style attack.
A van (or several) pulls into a school parking lot and half a dozen to several dozen heavily armed terrorists enter the building.
Having hundreds or thousands of armed citizens a few minutes away does little good. By the time they arrive the terrorists have the children under control. Hundreds of hostages.
The only thing that CAN stop these guys is an equivalent or greater force in the right place at the right time. Which isn’t at all likely unless you have relevant intelligence, in which case of course they’d normally be stopped before they get anywhere near the school.
Armed teachers is the only possibility I can think of, but of course most schools in America are “gun-free” zones and most teachers are anti-gun. Certainly their unions are. And such an assault wouldn’t be stopped by a few handguns, in any event.

The narrative during the Bush years pinned the loss of innocent life on his decisions. At least Bush had Congressional support for his war efforts.
No doubt the Left would rather pin the Norway massacre on a “Rightwing, Christian extremist”, but a connection to Libya could derail the Left’s zeal to defame Christian Conservatives in the US.
Once again, the Left is spinning the acts of a madman on the Right. It never matters what political alignment the perpetrator holds — could be Left, Centrist, or Right, but the spin is always against the Right.
