John Boehner responds: Obama 'moved the goal posts'
L.A. Times ^ | 7/22/11 | Michael A. Memol

Negotiations on a debt ceiling increase broke down when President Obama made a late push for additional tax increases House Speaker John Boehner said late Friday, countering the president's account of the swiftly-deteriorating talks. Moments after Obama professed to be puzzled at Republicans' unwillingness to accept "an extraordinarily fair deal," Boehner said it was the president who scuttled the plan. "The White House moved the goal posts," he said, with Obama demanding $400 billion in revenues beyond what the two had already agreed to. "It's the president who walked away from his agreement and demanded more money at the last minute."

I was going to post this but I will comment here: basically Obama wanted to force the GOP to raise taxes, just to be able to campaign on it....

I hope this pathetic clown gets what he has earned with a quick trip to the unemployment line

Obama and the Senate RATS have no good options, and they are trying to bluff the GOP into a bad deal to fracture the GOP coalition, such as demands for higher taxes, rather than tax reform.

If BO gets a phony deal, he appeases his base but gets his credit downgrade in 90 days, further hurting the economy abd his reelection.

If BO gets a real deal, with major spending cuts, he avoids default and a credit downgrade but enrages his base, his fundraising, and his re-election.

The game is up for BO and his asinine Keynesian economics.

I am proud of Boehner for standing firm in the midst of tremendous media hostility. If you want to help support Boehner, call your reps and senators and tell them you support Boehner and CCB and that BO is acting like a petulant child. Spending cuts, not tax increases.

Just took a couple of days of pressure and bonehead, decided to ‘see the light’ or was he reading the Tea Leaves come ‘12.

Let his days in office be few, and a REAL CONSERVATIVE LEADER take his place.

Mantra is REFORM, CUT, and NO MORE TAXES. You just can’t cut you have to root out stupid programs eliminate them, REFORM the 45+ years of donor palm greasing that has driven up the cost of each program yearly.

First one on the list, High way beautification via Lady Bird Johnson...TN share is half a Mil a year, multiple that times 50 and it is a hefty chunk of change.

There is a list some where on FR with all the useless programs that can be eliminated, please someone find and post it again.

My Senator (McCain) is not worth urinating on.

Calling his office just encourages him to do the wrong thing ;-)

The Right wants a shutdown.
The Left wants to default.

Hang on to your hats, folks. Gonna be a bumpy ride.

” Unless you are willing to default on your massive debt and possibly send the country, and possibly the entire world, into a massive depression, it may be necessary to accept an increase of the debt ceiling just to get a deal.”

Rubbish.....you bought the spin. I have been in banking and finance all of my life. We wouldn’t default on anything!

No it isn’t. Not at all.

We PAY these congressmen big salaries, with numerous perks, and an insane pension to stand up to pressure. If they can’t or won’t, they need to leave.

I wasn’t talking about the speaker. I was talking about the guy in the WH.

Perfect quote to post, and yes, you look at the wider picture and you are correct that keeping the debt issue on the front page does keep the focus off the real crime of F&F.

BS...you are either a man of honor or you’re not, if you make a deal you honor that...all this is for zero is political theater and Boehner and Cantor both know it...they’re not interested in playing this teenager’s game.

Obama walked away because Boehner put in a poison pill that would require the obliteration of the personal mandate on Obamacare if the cuts weren’t made.

Is this your opinion/guess or do you have a source you trust that this definitely happened? I've been reading you long enough that I would trust your word without asking for exposure of the source.

I would certainly be reassured if it's fact instead of opinion. Thanks in advance.

P.S. I agree with your position on certain specific "revenue increases" in your post #31.

It’s axiomatic. Once a person shows himself to be weak you keep up your attack. Boehner’s ongoing weakness allowed the budget charade to persist way beyound its “sell by date”.

Ity remains to be seen whether or not Boehner has grown a backbone.

Weren’t the demrats claiming that if the debt ceiling was not raised by Aug. 2nd America would default and all sorts of bad things would happen to the folk—no SS, no medicare et al.

It appears that date will come and go and guess what? America will still be functioning—just not in Washington.

I don’t see that as a bad thing.

Taking the Senate would be great, taking the WH would be great, but if we can keep and expand conservatives in the House - we own the purse strings. We just need conservatives to get better at playing the PR game while maintaining the commitment to keeping our nation as the example for what freedom can achieve...

I think we've maxed out the House. The Senate is within our grasp, and the right candidate will send Barry to the dustbin of history.

WHY is it always "RESPONDS" with the repub/rino/conserv/tparty???????????????????????????????

Why don't they "get it" that they have to attack first...keep attacking.....attack again....ALWAYS?????????????

The say it doesn't take a "2x4".....

Well....in the case of the repub/rino/conserv/tparty....it takes something a lot more substantial.

Except for one possible candidate....and she attacked immediately ("lame duck president").

One lady with the guts to state the truth in unambiguous terms.
