Negotiations on a debt ceiling increase broke down when President Obama made a late push for additional tax increases House Speaker John Boehner said late Friday, countering the president's account of the swiftly-deteriorating talks. Moments after Obama professed to be puzzled at Republicans' unwillingness to accept "an extraordinarily fair deal," Boehner said it was the president who scuttled the plan. "The White House moved the goal posts," he said, with Obama demanding $400 billion in revenues beyond what the two had already agreed to. "It's the president who walked away from his agreement and demanded more money at the last minute."

Yes they do. They don't compromise their principals, but they do look for compromises that benefit them.
Winners dont negotiate.
Yes they do. Everyone negotiates and winners know how to use negotiations to their advantage. Negotiations 101 - deadlines (real or percieved) canj be used to force bad decisions. That has been a hallmark of the BO admin and is at play in this issue. My opinion is that Boehner should take the clock out of the equatio with a clean 45 day debt increase bill. Put the onus on the Senate and WH to default or replay this this debate for the next several months.
Winners always negotiate.
The Republicans won the House in 2010 due a massive shift in the mood of the electorate.
Agreed. But that same fickle electorate put BO in the WH in 2008, has a long history of having a short memory and being short sighted, and is made up of 45%+ of a voting population that gets more from government than they put in. I want and believe that the 2010 elections were a turning point - I just can't be sure yet.
All revenue/spending bills originate in the House. Not in the Oval Office, not in the SenateThe House!
Again - I agree - which is why the House is the most critical element. It has not flexed it's muscle for almost two decades. We must get more conservatives into the House plain and simple. The Senate priority 2 (due to their ability to confirm judges) and the WH priority 3. Good people in the House can set the budget course to fix our nation.
Boner and company need to advance three simple points and then stand firm: 1) No debt ceiling increase; 2) No new taxes; and, 3) Significant spending cuts NOW.
Using the name "boner" doesn't help anything. He is at the tip of the spear - at least give him the courtesy of using his correct name. There will be a debt ceiling increase - face the facts. That has always been a given - the deficit momentum can not be stopped on a dime. The only hope is to build in real spending cuts while slowing down the deficit train and eventualy pushing it backwards.
The Democrats are going to say bad things about Boner and the Republicans no matter what. The President is going to say bad things about Boner and the Republicans no matter what. The press is going to say bad things about Boner and the Republicans no matter what. Theyve got nothing to lose. What the democrats and media are going to say is a given - no doubt about it. The real issue is what will be the damage to our nation. The democrats and media don't care. I believe the Speaker does. That puts him in a weak negotiating position and I think he is handling it well.
personal opinions of course.
Take care.
The 800B was a revenue increase. The 400B was a tax increase.
The 800B revenue increase was to be achieved by LOWERING TAX RATES and INCREASING THE TAX BASE. We want more people paying taxes and we want lower tax rates.
The 400B was tax hikes that Obama wanted after meeting with the Senate Democrats.
IT AIN’T OVER PAL
I think Boehner has that private sector background, or at least had - not sure how the beltway has changed him. My understanding is that his background is small business. Not sure if politics has corrupted him yet but don't think it has.
As I have said before - I think he is negotiating from apoint of principal - which is a very vulnerable pointof weakness in Washington.
” Thank you. I dont understand why even Freepers have a hard time with this:
We do not want to raise the debt limit period!”
Folks, we have a W I N N E R !!
” I hope and believe you are right on that, but voters betting on hope and change gave us the current residentof the White House “
N O............John Foster McKane gave us the current occupant of the WH. The man who actually campaigned for his opponent!!!!
“Even after the day’s events — and the president’s tough rhetoric — Boehner said the relationship between the two was not “permanently damaged” and that he still trusted Obama.”
WOW! Boehner still “Trusts Obama”!?
We definitely need a new SOH.
McQueeg is still pulling for the other side.
You know I love Sarah but man do I hate me some John “f’n scumbag” McCain.
No shots fired and he’s already trying to surrender.
Yep
McCain D E S P I S E S CONSERVATIVES, EVER SINCE 2000
Sick, twisted freak.
No more closed doors.
Truth!
Speaker John Boehner knew what he was talking about. He played football as a center and linebacker for legendary coach Gerry Faust at Cincinnati’s Moeller High.
“The whining and stammering you noticed (in my opinion) is the disbelief that the Speaker would dare walk away. I would bet he honestly believes the “people” are behind him. I would bet he doesn’t believe his internal polls, he “knows” he’s “right” regardless because he has never been told he was wrong before.”
A brilliant assessment, IMO! He’s the Golden Child who’s always had his way. But oh, the fury (so evident in his eyes and defiant manner) on the rare occasions when he doesn’t.
His name is spelled Boehner, unless you are referring to his high school nick name.
The use of the term revenue increases is one the DemonRATs use to spiff up the idea of giving the shaft to the American taxpayers. Boehner uses the term along with its proper name, tax increases, to make sure we know we are being given the shaft.
You are on to his long term goal, to be Secretary General to the U.N. What I am concerned about is what happens when we go into default. It could get ugly in this country as Zer0 has defaulted this country into another banana republic. If this turns into riots in the streets, we could slip into martial law and Zer0 attempting to suspend the elections. Many people have this scenario in their minds as they watch this ass clown Zer0 prove he is no leader. He is just another narcissistic actor in history who rather be a dictator than a leader.
“A real or perceived default would cut BS discretionary spending, and the voters would blame Obama by a wide margin.”
I disagree. BHO this evening threatened to raise the debt ceiling anyway (not caring that our credit rating will still be downgraded if that’s all that’s done). It doesn’t mean that he’ll agree to ANY cuts then, without raising taxes. But the downgrade will have people (most of whom are uninformed, and lots of them BHO fans) out for Republicans’ blood because interest rates will go through the roof. They’ll mistakenly think that The One “did his best” but the evil Tea Party Repubs messed it all up.
A lose for the country, a lose for our side - and a win for Obama.
If things were reversed, the Democrat Speaker would be seen as standing on principle while being bullied by that mean SOB Republican President.
Imagine what this country would look like if the Media was really nonpartisan. Facts might count for something if that was the case.
I believe Boehner is a tough opponent that has Zer0 back on the one yard line on forth down. He has said that playing against Zer0 is like playing against Jello. When you try to pin him down, he goes “all wobbly” all over the place. Imagine trying to deal with such an ass clown. No wonder Zer0 is trying to move the goal posts. The only way he can get any points now is to move the goal posts down to around the 20 yard line and hope for a field goal from the one yard line. Pretty pathetic.
“All revenue/spending bills originate in the House.”
Yes, but that’s just the first stage. Senate has stopped us in our tracks before and will again. We need to win the Senate also, by a good amount. Winning the WH is important as well to do the best good and repair the country, but strong control in Congress can at least override presidential vetoes.
