Ten weeks pregnant, Lindsay O’Brien says she never thought twice about racing out of her Market Frankford El Train car at the 63rd St. Station last Wednesday when an alleged thief tried to steal her purse.

In an exclusive interview with Eyewitness News, the 28-year-old expectant mom from Delaware County says she chased Vaughn Matthews, a career criminal with a dozen arrests going back 19 years, down a stairwell, but when she tried to get her bag from him, he lashed out, breaking her wrist and punching her in the stomach.

That’s when O’Brien says she drew on her 3.5 years of kick-box training, leveling a kick at the suspect’s shin, shattering it in two places.

Officers say they found Matthews, screaming in pain, lying on the street.

O’Brien says after being checked out at the hospital, her baby is fine.

He should be really popular where he’s going, especially after the pregnant woman he attempted to steal the purse from chased him down, kicked his ass and broke his shin in two places and left him screaming in pain. Yep, real popular.

That reads like he was one or two steps down from her. His shoulders level with her belly button. Perfect geometry for a devastating kick. Lucky he blocked it with his chin, a bit higher impact point and he could be dead.

Front snap kick would be my guess. It is basically used to push your opponent away from you. You raise your leg, and then shoot it forward. Think kicking a door open.

What you are describing is a “roundhouse” style kick. Common in kickboxing in blows to the side of the body or the head and relies on velocity as there is not much mass behind the blow. A front kick is done kicking straight forward and striking usually with the ball of the foot and toes curled back to avoid breaking them. This kick is usually to the solar plexus, though a kick to the groin could also be done with a football style kick using the top of the foot. The front kick can have considerable mass behind the blow if leaning into the kick. A side kick is a twisting blow giving a strike with the side of the heel. The side kick can have high mass behind it due to the twisting motion of the body. In kickboxing any blow to break a leg would be a disqualification so would not be practiced. But, anyone familiar with the body and martial arts would know the ease of breaking the leg of an attacker not protecting against it.

Probably either a front snap kick or a side kick.

Don’t mess with pregnant women, they are insane.

Philadelphia isn’t far from Amish country.

Dude! Sometimes eastbound traffic is backed up on the Schuylkill expressway with all the buggies carrying criminals into town. The other criminals take the Paoli local in from the Main Line. Wayne, Bryn Mawr and Devon are the criminal nests. There are times I have to go to West Philly for safety. How long will the law abiding citizens of Philadelphia tolerate this ex-urban and suburban crime wave.

Sounds like you are describing a roundhouse kick. I wouldn’t have used that for anything below the waist, front and sides usually have more power, but it depends on the person.

And yes, it is a common kick in kickboxing.

I love that he broke her wrist, punched her in the stomach and HE is the one lying on the street bawling.

Goes to show, criminals are sissies.

Shin, not chin. I read it the same way initially.

Saw my daughter, a kickboxer, demolish three karate women from Anchorage by deflecting their punch with a straight-leg shoulder-high kick.

Frankford El Train?

I am quite familiar with this transportation system - I recall in also being called “The African Queen”.

I’d believe it. I was on the kickboxing team in college until I blew out my knee. You can get some great high kicks.

I miss kickboxing. I still keep in shape but I’m nowhere able to do what I used to.
