INVERNESS is gearing up to play host to one of the biggest gatherings of the year this Saturday as the Highland Games returns to the Northern Meeting Park.

Since combining the city’s Armed Forces Day celebrations last year, the event is now one of the largest staged in Scotland and will commence with a parade through the streets of Inverness which will feature nine pipes and drums bands and hundreds of service personnel both past and present.

Included in the ranks for the parade, which has been organised by members of Inverness British Legion, will be sailors from the First Mine Counter Measures Squadron (MCM1), soldiers form Company 7 Scots and Airmen from RAF Kinloss who will be joining hundreds of members of the veteran and cadet organisations based in the Highlands.

The MCM1 Squadron, which has been given the honour of leading the parade, are based at Faslane under the command of Commander David Bence who was formerly the Commanding Officer of HMS Inverness, which prior to decommissioning in 2005 received the Freedom of the City of Inverness.

I wish I could be there. But since I can’t, I’ll have to settle for going to the Highland Games in Enumclaw, Washington next weekend.

I used to attend the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and even competed once when I was young.

I would have won the 100 yds if they had not run the 220 first. It had been around two months since I had done any training and did not realize how much I had gotten out of shape.

At the 150 yard line I was 5 yards ahead of everyone. Suddenly the bear jumped on my back and I barely was able to finish tho I think I was still 3rd.

The 100 was the next race and my legs literally felt like rubber. I went ahead and ran but finished well down and probably a full second or so below my normal time.

Grandfather Mountain is the largest gathering of Scots in the entire world that is except for Scotland.

Do not know, Sand - I suspect they would, though.

The last time I went to Gran father Mountain I decided it was just too much trouble with the traffic. It was always nice to visit with my Mother’s clan, Clan McFie. Mother was a McDuffie. Also Clan Morrison which is my middle name. Clan Lewis, another of my relatives was also represented.

When the Highland Games were still in Waxhaw, NC, many years ago (I think 1989). Because my family name is a sept of clan Morrison , I was invited to compete in the caber toss for them. The invitation had to be declined because I was training for power lifting meet and could not adjust the training schedule. Sadly, I have always regretted that decision.

I'm mostly Irish - some Scots on my maternal side - Brison was the name - came from Scotland before the Revolution. Would love to go to Celtic games - not in shape to compete and at this age will never be, But can still cheer on those who are!

The area of NW Florida where my family ended up was first settled by Scots from the Western Islands. They are considered highlanders.

I once saw a census of the Island of Colonsay from either 1741 or maybe 1841. I think the earlier date is correct. All the names were familiar to me. All my classmates in Walton County had the same names and some I didn’t even know were Scottish until I saw that census. Names like Blue or Currie of Shaw.
