I’m not an expert in such things, but I’m wondering the same things. It is certainly not a joke. Multiple sources including an Australian Army Brigadier directly through the Australian Defence Force.

Aside from some naturally generated methane, there shouldn’t have been anything that dangerous. Unless someone dumped something in there...(gasoline, for instance).
