(UK) Premature baby survives after doctors advised abortion (4 months premature)

A mother who was told by doctors to consider aborting her baby has spoken of her joy after he was allowed to leave hospital despite being born four months early.

Jacob McMahon became Britain's most premature surviving twin after he was born on February 22, just 23 weeks into pregnancy, at a weight of 1lb 4oz.

Five months later he has now been deemed healthy enough to leave hospital with his mother Sara Fisher, 25, and father Scott McMahon, 26.

Doctors had advised Miss Fisher to abort Jacob after his twin sister, Emie, died when she was born at 21 weeks and six days due to an infection.

But Jacob followed eight days later, twelve hours before doctors would have demanded a final decision from the family on whether to terminate the pregnancy.

The legal upper limit for abortion is 24 weeks, but Jacob is one of a growing list of babies who survived despite being born before the threshold.

God bless the mom and the baby. And may the “doctor” go to hell. I’m sorry I called him/her a doctor.

We had 24 weekers that were deemed unlikely to survive and were encouraged to let one of our twins go. Not abort it per say, just Terri Schiavo him. 3 and a half years later they are both very health children. Not every situation but, it happens here too. My pro government healthcare friends often tell me without Obamacare my children will never have healthcare in the future due to their pre-existing conditions. I often remind him if they were born with Obamacare in place (death panels?) I believe we would have never had the choice to give them care in the first place.

Thanks for posting this. I lost my daughter's twin at 11 weeks gestation, the doctor was worried she may not survive. I have to give him credit, never once did he mention terminating the pregnancy when we thought we were going to lose our daughter. He was very encouraging. My heart goes out to this family, it's a difficult situation trying to grieve for one, while being ecstatic over the other one.

usually when the first twin miscarries, the chance of carrying the second twin to term is very very low, and the chance of infection of the uterus (that can kill the mom and the kid) is very very high. So they advise immediate delivery of the second twin.

This is not quite the same as “abortion”, since they would try to save the second twin, who in this case was previable.

In this case, mom insisted they take that chance and she got eight days: Presumably the docs gave her medicine to delay the onset of labor, and also medicine to help the baby’s lungs to mature. and thank God the medicine did delay labor enough to allow the baby to survive.

Bless her and the baby, but don’t condemn the doctor, since allowing the second twin to pass normally albeit previable is not the same as causing an abortion...
