Jerry Brown Eases Path For Undocumented College Students To Receive Aid July 25, 2011
Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation Monday allowing undocumented college students to access private financial aid for college, calling the new law another piece of an investment in people. But he said he was not yet ready to commit to signing a second piece of the Dream Act, which would provide public funding for those students.
Brushing over the politics of illegal immigration during a ceremony at the Los Angeles City College library, Brown talked about the bill within the broader context of maintaining education funding during the budget crisis.
We are facing many obstacles and adversaries, Brown said. The debate is very clear: shrivel public service, shrink back, retrench, retreat from higher education, from schools, from the investment in people; or make the investment. So this is one piece of a very important mosaic, which is a California that works for everyone and a California who understands where our strength is.
Its not just in having some extra money to go to a movie or to buy a flat screen television from China, its also being able to go to a community college or a state college and being able to pay for it, he said as the crowd cheered and applauded.
Proponents of the California Dream Act -- which was vetoed multiple times by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger -- hailed Browns approval of AB 130 as an important first step that will allow illegal immigrants access to privately funded scholarships beginning next year.
The author of the new law, Assemblyman Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles), has sponsored a second bill, AB 131, that would make illegal immigrants eligible for Cal Grants and other forms of state tuition aid.

I give up. Just give California back to Mexico. It’s not worth keeping anymore.
That would be one who fails to provide his transcript on request, I presume....
We’re laying off cops to pay for this?
Thank you Moonbeam. When I leave the State next month, it will be the LAST time the State of California robs this business owner of profits, and by the way, I’m taking all the jobs with me, to Arizona!
Apparently, no one is concerned one bit about the sheer amount of debt this state has..../s =.=
Were laying off cops to pay for this?
Yes, and most of those loans will never get paid back.
Michael Savage donated $5000 to Jerry Brown.
But Savage claims he is a conservative talk show host who is very anti illegal immigrant. Savage is a fake . Google it.
I am leaving California in 2 months.
There are more people in the cart than pulling it. So, naturally, this administration tosses more people into the cart.
The budget “passed” was a joke — legerdemain taken to high art and low humor.
Has he ever tried to explain giving $5K to Brown?
Headline should read, “Brown makes it legal for illegals to steal more money from citizens and legal residents!”
Can’t leave, unfortunately. Our biz is tied up with the studios, and if only one of the majors moves to Texas as an example, we can bring a millions of $$ million to that state in accounts but if only...
Because California is rolling in money.
Sometimes you just have to laugh. What else can you do?
Cali born and raised. Will never be the same. Headed to the Philipines in 2 months. An established third world nation. Lots of fools will wake up on the wrong side of history with a big “D” next to their names.
Good...just one more nail in the Kalifornia coffin.
Please consider writing the fool governor and copying each member of the state legislature and also the Sacramento Bee with your important story.
.
Also, even in NY, you have to supply tons of documentation for any sort of financial aid, need or merit based. What documentation would you provide if you are, by definition, illegal and therefore undocumented?
Two years ago my niece and four of her friends applied to Cornell, really without a chance to get in. They had ok grades and test scores, but not Cornell. Low and behold, the girl with the worst grades of the five was accepted. Surprised, they all asked her how she did it. Guess what? She checked the box that she was of Hispanic origin. She had an interview, and she was specifically asked again of what Hispanic origin was she? Already caught in her lie, she said Mexican on her mothers side. Her mother is actually Irish and her father Italian, no Hispanic blood and no recent immigration at all! The girls all chose other colleges they are happy at, and this girl didn't go to Cornell because she at least admitted to herself it was based on an unfair lie. But they were all also mad, because they may have all gotten in were they a minority.
It is sickening what they will do to us and our own families and children who have built this nation. Soon we will be second class citizens to such Roman style “free bread” of these politicians.
