Hispanic Growth Threat To GOP
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | July 26, 2011 | Winthrop Quigley

The number of Hispanic voters nationally and in New Mexico is growing at a faster pace than any other ethnic group, and that could spell trouble for the Republican party over the next 10 years, a political analyst with a business advocacy group said Tuesday.

“Republicans are in trouble with Hispanics,” said Michael Davis, the Washington, D.C.-based vice president for political programs of the Business and Industry PAC. The party’s stance on immigration may not be bad policy, David said, “but the tone and language is extremely harsh and it drives away Hispanics.”

Either party can improve its chances of national electoral success if a national Hispanic political leader emerges, Davis said.

In New Mexico, Davis said, 58.2 percent of the population younger than 18 years is Hispanic. “Every year for the next 20 years, there will be 500,000 more U.S.-born Hispanics of voting age,” he said.

Hispanic population growth in Texas and those voters’ tendency to vote for Democrats will mean Texas will flip from Republican to Democrat by 2020 if present trends continue, Davis said.

Heck, now in NM less than 41% of the population is white not Hispanic according to the 2010 census. We have a female Republican Hispanic governor because even Hispanics got tired of the Richardson administration corruption and saw the Democrats just offered more of the same in 2010. But in general he's right. Immigration is the bugaboo that will hamper the Republicans in 2012 and beyond.

The Hispanics I know are hard working and honest. Ergo, they will tend to vote for conservatives.

There’s only one group that insists on constantly voting for failure and corruption......and it is not them.

Eventually the chilluns of all those immigrants and illegals will see through the smokescreen and decide AMERICA HAS ENOUGH PEOPLE, BAR ENTRY.

It's happened many times before.

I'm still working on the problems that occurred at the conclusion of Queen Anne's War (The War of the Spanish Succession).

It was simply horrible I tell you, horrible.

I agree, and in time the dems will benefit big-time.

As long as people who vote for democrats stay in “blue-states”, it doesn’t matter how many of them there are. For those who move to “red-states”, we need to educate them on the freedom that comes with conservatism.

My Hispanic friends, who are engineers, accountants or sales managers are pretty much dead-set against illegal immigration also.

They are Hispanic, so they don’t feel burdened by anyone calling them “racist.” They don’t want their tax dollars wasted either and they don’t like seeing people break the law and get paid to do it.

That's the problem!

If all those Hispanics would vote for conservative Republicans, I would personally place a Welcome Mat on the Rio Grande.

absolutely...the hispanics in my town work 7 days a week looking for any kind of work in any kind of weather just to put a buck in their pocket- they are respectful and polite- the more i see them the more angered i am by the generational welfare recipient....

fact is the hispanic growth is only a threat to the GOP if the GOP dismisses them and does not bring them into the fold and show them how liberalism is a threat to their culture, values and way of life...

I wonder what will happen when we don’t have money for either party to give away “free” taxpayer funded stuff? That is coming soon, one way or another. Promising different groups more free stuff is pretty much the whole ‘Rat game plan. Do they still gain when they can’t do that anymore?

Every year we are inundated with a new crop of anchor babies, many getting free medical to cover birth and forever after. They are all future voters

Yes—the Hispanic immigrants I have known—and granted, I haven’t known the druggies etc.—have been very fine, family oriented people—strongly in favor or private property rights—who—if they but knew the truth—are conservative Republicans at heart.

...a political analyst with a business advocacy group...

This is all you need to know about this hack. The businessmen he is advocating for are the people who want to pay 68 cents an hour for labor. Jobs that most Americans won't do, as they say. This guy can blow it out his ear. There is no evidence that these illegals would be a solid GOP voting block and I am not interested in open borders to get them.

Heck, I’m in L.A. and the whites are digging deeper into the outer suburbs just to avoid the mex. The latinos will not, in general, vote for GOP because they equate them with rednecks. They already have the self-entitlement mentality. They SIMPLY want open borders, and it’s right for the GOP to stand up. What do I know, I’m not even completely white..

In my own office I see that -- same as everyone else, most work hard, some don't. And the ones that do, are conservative with family first.

However, one problem is immigration and it splits families like the civil war split them. One lady has close relatives who came across the border illegally (though the rest of the family are citizens or here legally). She is conservative to the core but opposes the driver's license crackdown because of that. It's an issue we don't discuss between us because of the sensitivity.

I say again, in 2012 the GOP needs Marco Rubio in the VP spot. And I also say again: Whoever carries Florida in 2012 will occupy the White House.

Most Hispanics that are legally here in the country are of the character:
1. Super Strong Family Focused
2. Religious - Typically Roman Catholic
3. Believe in Hard Work and getting Paid

For some reason, that doesn’t make me think Democrat.

The only thing that is swaying Hispanics are a subset interested in legalization of relatives in the country illegally and a tendency of some of the parishes to let politics leak into their church’s conscience. Take by force from the rich to give to the poor is confused with charity.

This isn’t the mainstream Hispanic Voter that holds these convictions, it is the lack of speaking out on these topics that allow other Hispanics to be swayed because they have only arguments on one side of this issue in many cases. This is the same thing that happens when you get a small group making noise and no one confronting the message. Even if it is wrong, it spreads.

Other than that, I think you are looking at the largest influx of Republicans waiting in the wings in the entire history of the United States.

It is only a question of whether the Republican’s surrender to the message of the left through the media.

Hispanic population growth in Texas and those voters’ tendency to vote for Democrats will mean Texas will flip from Republican to Democrat by 2020 if present trends continue, Davis said.

And what is seldom mentioned is that "present trends" are based on an Hispanic population that is about 1/3 illegal in the US. If we ever started enforcing immigrations laws and grant no more amnesties to illegals, those projections will not come about.

Republicans who think they can win future Hispanic votes by pandering and granting another amnesty are deluding themselves, and if ever successful would doom Republican prospects for many generations.
