Environmental Protection Agency ^ | July 28, 2011 | Re: Stacy Kika

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) today announced a settlement with Caterpillar Inc. to resolve alleged Clean Air Act violations for shipping more than 590,000 highway and non-road diesel engines without the correct emissions controls. Caterpillar also allegedly failed to comply with emission control reporting and engine-labeling requirements. Caterpillar will pay a $2.55 million penalty, continue a recall of non-compliant engines, and reduce excess emissions… Caterpillar (must also recall the) non-compliant engines to install the correct ATDs and correct the fuel injector and fuel map settings. In addition to the recall.

One can but wonder at the cost of recalling and refitting 590,000 diesel engines.

Truly, the power to regulate is the power to crush. Stroke of a pen, law of the land.

Don't worry Cat, like all large corporations, will not pay the EPA fines or cost.
Their customers will eventually, down the line, pay it though.

Idiot government!

“Mexico will be happy to have caterpiller and all the new jobs.”

Even better, China will be more than happy to take those stinky engines, and hire people to use the equipment in which they reside to build their country. Why should we be involved at all?

You have to give the EPA credit, they are doing the maximum amount of damage they can, while they can. I have a certain amount of respect for dedication.

I believe Caterpillar recently quit making tractor trailer engines altogether because of the emissions requirements.

My sister has two School Bus’s with caterpillar Engines.

Theyu are junk. The things are constantly in the shop because the emissions crap they loaded on them keep giving trouble. A Regen system they call it. Cat had to take a perfectly good engine and screw it up to make it to Gov.t Standards. Take that crap off and she would have a good piece of equipment.

During Obama's push to pass the stimulus, he told the media that Caterpillar, Inc. would be able to save 22,000 jobs if the stimulus passed. Caterpillar's CEO came out later and said that was not true.

This government action ought to teach them not to make Obama look bad.

I read elsewhere that the engines shipped without fuel programming software. That does not mean, however, that the engines are actually violating emissions standards and is another example of EPA overreach. They are mandating an expensive recall in order to fix a non-existent problem.

You are correct, I understand Cat has stopped producing all truck tractor engines, and all engines that were in stock were purchased by Halliburton (Whom I do contract work for) for replacement engines for their fleet of Kenworth trucks that use Cat engines.
One more nail in our coffin....

The things are constantly in the shop because the emissions crap they loaded on them keep giving trouble.

Which might be why they left the crap off, they probably got tired of the complaints and warranty costs.

I guess it would have killed the EPA to have indicated the timeframe in which these violations are said to have occurred. It’s hardly news to CAT and other companies when EPA rule changes become effective, after all, this is their business. This makes it sound like CAT was sneaking around willfully disregarding the rules while I suspect the truth is more subtle than that.
