Memphis unemployment rate jumped to 12.1 percent in June

The Memphis area's jobless rate surged in June, nearing the worst levels of the recession.

Layoffs by government offices and the tourism industry caused the surge along with a big flow of people who had given up looking for work coming back into the labor force and hunting for jobs again.....

Business analysts sounded a pessimistic note, saying the high jobless rate is another sign the Memphis economy is running poorly.

"We're still fighting our way up from the bottom," said economist John Gnuschke of the University of Memphis....

The jobless rate rose in June. Here's how June 2011 compares to June 2010:

uneployment went up? Guess that load of meth didn’t make it across the river....put the street boys out of work.

One guy tried to get a job making change at one of the casinos and was told he’d have to know math fairly well. The applicant’s response was “For real?”

Tremendous farmland in surrounding areas. Maybe some can get out and grow food.

When I graduated from university in 2007, I was in the short-list for Procter and Gamble’s marketing department and we had the final math test. It was a 10 minute test while the mod went out of the room for a moment. All of a sudden, a couple of the applicants took out their smartphones and did the math on them, even though we were explicitly told to use pen and paper and use the back of the paper for calculations.

I must have missed where Memphis has EVER been a great city for employment. I love the blues, and BBQ, but the city’s pretty run down. At least it was in the 90’s.

I was born and raised in Memphis, 1944.
It was a fine city until the the W/B ratio went from 60/40
to 40/60. The blacks then took over everything and destroyed all that was good.
I left Tennessee and the USA in 2000. It was off and on till
Jan. 2005, when I left for good.

Actually Memphis used to have a real low unemployment rate due to its location in the center of the country. Lots of warehouses here and surrounding area.

If the northeast is any indicator, Mexicans will displace them and the economy will take off. Not the legitimate, taxable economy that we are accustomed to, but money will change hands, people will work, and vacant storefronts will re-open. This is the real reason for “sanctuary cities”; they are accomodating the new people Americans refused to give birth to, so that social security, our businesses, and our government workforce can survive. Things like W-2s and any kind of standards (like legal employees, the English language, licenses for barbers, and such) may go the way of the dodo, but the place will be hopping.
