NETHERLANDS, July 29, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) - An opinion poll conducted by the Een Vandaag Institution of 800 general medical practitioners shows that there is a broad acceptance of the practice of euthanasia and a general willingness among Dutch doctors to offer euthanasia to people in their care.
The survey was conducted from 21 to 27 July and published in the Dutch press.
The poll found that 86.5% of Dutch doctors would cooperate in principle with a request for euthanasia, while only 7.9% said they would not cooperate.
64.6% said they were under pressure regularly or sometimes to commit euthanasia. Increasing pressure from the family of a patient for euthanasia was reported by 36% of respondents. 80.3% of respondents said they feel increasing pressure by society in general to commit euthanasia.
68.1% of doctors said they had euthanized patients within the past five years, and more than half said they had done so from 2 to 5 times. Four percent of physicians agreed to a request for euthanasia more than 10 times over the past 5 years.
57.4% said they have never refused a request for euthanasia in the past 5 years, while 26.1% refused once. Among those who refused on principle, 39.4% said they sent the requesting patient to a colleague.
Just over half (51.3%) of doctors said they request the presence of a physician specialist panel (the SCEN) while euthanizing a patient, while 16.5% said they just bring in a colleague.
In regard to patients in the latter stages of dementia, 36% of physicians surveyed said they would honor a request for euthanasia made by a patient at the onset of the illness; 41.7% said they would not, and 22.3% were undecided.
For people who request the right to euthanasia because they are tired of life, 64.5% of survey respondents said they would not assist them, while 20.4% said they would fulfill the request.
However, 36.5% of doctors favor the introduction of the Drion pill, a medical kit that allows so-called self-euthanasia that people could keep in their medicine cabinets. 50.9% opposed the introduction of the suicide-by-another-name kit.
Finally, 89.1% of Dutch doctors disagreed with the statement, Euthanasia has no place in general medical practice.
Unfortunately, this mindset is becoming more and more dominant among medical professionals.

I agree
The problem is the "pressure" from family members to off Granny so they can reap the rewards.
First off, having visited the Netherlands, I understand why they’d be open to assisted suicide. The place is a dump!
So, here’s the question. Bubba has worked hard and made a lot of money. He’s 80 years old now and needs expensive medical care. He slips and gets knocked out. So, do his greedy, worthless kids and grandkids get to off him?
Probably should go armed to the surgical table in case you need to practice self-defense.
Best you take care of your life yourself and leave my doctors alone. There are ways. it's not like this country is short of tall buildings.
The Age of Relativism....there is no God; there is no right and wrong....there is only man’s vision of right and wrong, so we can do whatever we want.
That will eventually slide into: You need to die because you are a drain on your family and friends. Then the state will kill them. It will be the state who decides who is useless as things “progress”.
Human nature never changes...it never evolves....the doctors have that ‘Lord of the Flies’ godless vision for mankind.....such a great philosophy for mankind. It will destroy every last piece of “civil” life we once had...no-one will be able to trust anyone else especially killer doctors. Pits people against each other too-—greed....a deadly sin.
Your thoughtful remarks will be lost in a sea of assertions like “MY BODY, MY CHOICE!” on what is supposedly a conservative website. I am convinced that what is left of Western civilization will disappear within a generation. This debate simply confirms how much of it is gone already.
It’s just a short trip from “Right to Die” to “Duty to Die”.
I understand their (non) logic. But in the US Constitution, there is an inalienable right to life, which means that no one can take it away-—no one ever has the right——and also even oneself can not give up their inalienable right to life if they wanted to....it is the foundation of our Constitution.
Of course, our Constitution is being thrown out....with abortion and gay marriage....the laws of nature and God’s laws are meaningless to the morons who call themselves “legal scholars”.
Nuremberg Trials and Civil Rights law speaks of Supra Posititve laws which are higher than man made up laws based on someone’s whim or need for power over others. Our document is supposed to be for Just Law and abortion, homosexual marriage denies fundamental Truths that exist in the Natural Rights (Natural Law Theory) part of our Constitution.
All what they are doing is unconstitutional and the Supra Positive law can declare all laws that defy natural law and God’s laws null and void.
That was used before and should be used now if we want to save the Constitution and have the Rule of Law again instead of this rule of man that the Founders tried to prevent by writing the Constitution and Bill of Rights and Federalist Papers....it spells out how illegal their unequal laws—which are laws not based on “Right Reason according to Nature” .
We see a fundamental usurpation of our Constitution by Marxists.
Your statement has an internal contradiction. You can arrange to commit suicide without the assistance of Big Nanny State and the entire Medical Profession holding your hand. Go for it! There are books and organizations that give all kinds of ideas and recipes, proven to work. You want to drag government approval and apparatus as well as the medical profession into "your life" and "your business". You want to make it others' business. That's called "hypocrisy".
Dont need the Nanny State, it would be between me and my Dr.
Of course you need the Nanny State. You whine that you want laws passed to suit you.
That’s the ultimate expression of Nanny State.
“I can’t kill myself on my own - whine - I need a doctor to hold my hand and the government to pass laws to help me!”
Hypocrite.
As if people haven’t been offing themselves without Nanny State ever since there were people.
Because civilized humans do not promote murder as a medical practice.
Nothing - not one thing - can stop a person from killing themselves if they want to. As I mentioned, there are books and organizations to help you every step of the way.
But no, you guys want to change the government and entire medical profession to suit your individual personal desire to off yourself.
If you whine “ooh, it’ll be too hard when I’m old and sick” - well tough, life ain’t always E-Z and smooth. So make plans ahead of time.
People who want the entire government and medical profession to kowtow to their own desire to kill themselves are hypocrites of the highest order.
What would the government be kowtowing to? Letting people make their own decisions with their Dr?
